Yamaha Dealers Series Round 1: Glen Helen Raceway Park S T O RV A N D P HO T O S B v B ET H AND B O B L AR o C K SAN BERNARDINO, CA MAY 21 , f the 450 riders competing in th e opening round of the Yamaha De a le rs Se rie s at Glen Helen Raceway , J ohn Burr Cycle's Te rry Fowle r was a pe rfect example of speed , tenacity an d endurance wra pped up in a 30-something bod y. Fowler se ized first-place finishes not only in the Vet Expert class but also in the J unior Vet Expert and 250cc Pro classes - after havi ng only one week of practice, as he has been recovering from a thumb injury he susta ine d s ix weeks ago . Fowler's first moto of th e da y was in the J u n io r Vet co m p e t itio n . He seized the ho leshot and never looked ba ck. Fowl er took th e win , fo llowed by Willy Musgrav e and Da rin Green. Fowl er adm itted th a t a lthough he ha s good c om petition in the Jun io r Ve t c lass, it is th e 250 cc Pro cl a s s that is importa nt to him . "Yo u alw ays wan t t o beat th e you ng guys ," sai d Fo wle r. "I don 't know who any of th e young kids are. So I'm jus t o n th e line , next to no one. It m igh t be th e best kid in th e wo rld , but it doesn 't wor k against me m en ta lly - it's just some kid nex t to m e." Fowler cla imed the holeshot in th e 250cc Pro rac e but was unable to distance himself from the rest of the rac ers as he had in the Junior Vet moto. Ge rr it Ord elman , Ste ve Drew a n d Dus ty Wa lters were in hot pu rsu it. After a second -la p cra s h took Drew out of contention, Wa lters moved up to th ird. F o w le r and Ordelman battled through the e nti re moto . O rd e lm a n sq ue e zed in tight through Bud's Cr e ek , Fowl er regain ed son:e distan c e a cross the triple ta bletops . Dur ing the white -flag lap, Ordelman suc ceeded in passing Fow ler in Bud's Creek. The two rid e rs were s ide by s ide comi ng down the tree straight befo re the final two turns and the finish li n e . Or delman , with a s light advantage com ing int o the secondto -last turn , blocked Fowler by cutting from the ins ide to the outside of the corne r. Fowler atte mpted to reca pture the lead by doubling the finish -line step -down , but O rde lm a n had a split -second advant a ge and took the win. Walters was thi rd. " He [Fowler] had some good lines ," said Orde lma n. "He was go ing to the outside and it was e ither go for broke or nothing , so I leaned it down a nd railed the ins ide ." In the first Vet Expert moto, Fowle r cla imed the holeshot and quickly distanc ed h imself from Da n Be rg and Musg rave , who cl a im e d second a nd th ird, respectively . Th e second Junior Vet motos also went smooth ly for Fowler. Musgrave claimed second and Green placed third. Fowler appea red a little more nervo us preparing for the start o f th e second 250cc Pro moto . "This is my first ra ce ba c k since I broke m y hand - I m ight have bit off more than I can chew," he admitted. "I hope not. Musg rav e -. ridi ng with an injured back and bruised ribs. claimed a respecta ble third: " I' m mo re than don e , " a ve ry exhausted Fowle r adm itted. "I can 't be lieve how t ired I a m . I'm happy. I'm going to get better. Maybe no t faste r. but I can go at that pace longer." There were several contestants who rode in multiple classes during the day 's events . Kory Ellis s we p t the Fo ur-Stroke Novice class and the highly competitive 250cc Novice class. Ca pturing the holeshot in th e first 250cc Novice first moto was Michael Bozarth. Ellis and Jason Myhren gave c hase . Behind the front-runners was a mu ltip le bik e pile -up. By th e e nd o f th e first lap, Ellis had taken th e le ad . Myhr en c h a rg e d into sec ond and Bozarth fe ll ba c k to th ird . Yamaha mounte d Ellis was able to s lightly distanc e h im s e lf fro m t he re s t of th e pa c k t o th e fi n is h lin e . Bozarth reg ained se cond an d app ear ed to have his sights set on Ellis . but time ran out. Myhren was th ird . What the two riders agreed on was that it had been a good but long, hot day at the races and it was definitely tim e to go home.
