Checkers Hare & Hound Los Angeles County Raceway Krause Clobbers the Competition Bush Whacks 'em at the OTHG GP Bv DAIU.A Bv 'CHRIS LVONS LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, FEB. 27 District 37's seventh race of the year was put on by the Checkers MC, and what an absolutely phenomenal race it was, from start to finish. The Checkers MC spent weeks laying out the course, and it really showed. The course took the riders through some really neat riding areas that many riders didn't even know existed in Luceme Valley. They carefully and thoughtfully arranged all the different types of desert terrain into one race very creatively. Montclair Yamaha-backed Paul Krause was the winner of the Chuck Stems Memorial Trophy and the AI Baker Memorial Trophy for claiming first overall and for finishing first Four-Stroke aboard his YZ426F. "I was really surprised at how good and creative a course the Checkers put together," said Krause. "Sure, the Experts think the gnarlier the better. but this was a course that was set up to be appealing to everybody." Vet Open racer Abe Baumann. who finished third in his class and eighth overall, had quite an interesting race. The John Burr Cycles/BRP/ Berg Racing/Rocket Rex Racing-backed rider said he really appreciated the "honest-to-goodness" bomb, and that it really helped. Baumann usually gets killer starts, but after a poor three· kick start, he still managed to get in front of the dust and take the lead for about five or six miles until he made a wrong tum. At that point, Baumann noticed Krause and American Honda's Tim Staab off in the distance. Once back on the course and still running with the top key players, Baumann fell in a ditch that he did not see and tweaked his bike and broke the visor off his helmet. Luckily, Baumann wasn't badly hurt and was still able to forge on to the finish. Results alA; 1. Paul Krause (Yam); 2. Dan Richardson (Kaw); 3. larry Roesefer (Kaw); 4. SANCHIRICO PALMDALE, CA, MAR. 12 Some 28 rev-happy Beginners lined up for the live-engine, clutch-hand-on-top-of-the-helmet start of the 45-minute Bandito Grand Prix at LACR. After experiencing an uncharacteristi· cally long six weeks of rain, the mota gods showered the Over The Hill Gang with lots of sun and perfect race conditions. The course combined both the front and back tracks, the front being more technjcal, filled with jumps and whoops, and the back consisting of thick sand and some high-speed straights. At the start of the race, Brian Cotham snagged a perfect start, ahead of Chris Bush, Bob Blake, Steve Mangione and Steve Molera. Bush seized the lead early and never looked back, riding a consistent race to take the win on the day. Southland Cycles/Pro-Valvebacked Mangione put in a late-moto charge. "The longer the race. the better it is for me," Mangione claimed. "I felt real fast in the sand washes. and that is where I did most of my passing. With two laps to go, I caught up to second-placed Blake and passed him. But on the last lap, after taking the white lIag, we were bar to bar going over the long grand· stand tabletop, and he had me by a wheel going into the left-hand tum. I chased him the rest of the course but couldn't get back around him." At the checkers, it was all Bush, with Blake and Mangione securing second and third. In one of the OTHG's most competitive classes, White Brothers/Torco/Troy Lee· backed Chris Sanchirico took the top honors; ahead of Chuck Bennett and Bruce Criswell. The podjum was aU green, as the trio all ride 1O<250s. "Sanchirico was riding real well," said Bakersfield Kawasaki·backed Bennett. "It was great, but I am coming off a shoulder injury and need to get back up to speed.' A hard-charging Criswell worked his way up from a dismal start to third. "My start was horrible," Criswell said, "and then I had trouble getting around everyone. Sanchirico is so fast, it's impossible to make any time on the guy. It was my fault; I am really lame out of the gate. The lappers were real tough to get around - I think they had a rear-view mirror and were blocking me on purpose - but I had a great time." At the end, Sanchirico finished with a com· fortable lead over Bennett and then Criswell in a very distant third. Results BEG: I. Chris Bush: 2. Bob Blake; 3. St~e Mangione; 4. Frank Vanes: 5. The top five began to spread out by the start of lap three. Ginolfi. in third, started to close the gap on Boyesen but continually made mistakes in the new "Experts only" section and was unable to reel in Boyesen. The first 250cc A mota finishing order was Duffy, Boyesen, Ginolfi. Boser and Johnson. Duffy got another holeshot in the second 250cc A moto and again never looked back. Johnson, Grove and Boyesen followed. Boyesen quickly passed Grove for third and got Johnson for second at the end of the first lap by tripling in the rhythm section while Johnson only doubled. At the start of lap two, the top five were Duffy, Boyesen, Grove, Ginolfi and Johnson. Near the end of lap two, Johnson passed Ginolfi for fourth. Then Grove went down, almost taking several riders with him. Johnson moved up to third, with Boser fourth and Timothy Dabbs fifth. Duffy easily took the second-moto win, followed by Boyesen, Johnson, Boser and Samuel Forrester. Duffy topped the 250cc A-class podium, with Boyesen second and Johnson third. In the first 125cc B moto, William Cohenour took the holeshot ahead of Matthew Coyle, but Coyle quickly passed for the lead, trailed by Wayne Frie, Cohenour, Zachary Camp and Adam McFadden. At the start of lap two, Camp and Frank Pasquale 11 passed Cohenour. Frie passed Coyle for the lead in the infield section. On the following long straight, it was a drag race for the lead between Frie and Coyle. Coyle had the insideline advantage going into the following tum and regained the lead. By the end of lap two, Frie had repassed Coyle for the lead. The first 125cc B moto went in the record books as Frie, Coyle, Camp, Jedediah Haines and Justin Teurck. Coyle took the holeshot in the second 125cc B moto but was quickly relegated to second by Ryan O'Malley. Haines charged up to third by lap two. Coyle held fourth and Ricky Conley was now fifth. Frie got around O'Malley for the lead. Haines moved up to second by lap three. The second 125cc B mota's finishing order was Frie, Haines. O'Malley, Teurck and Coyle.
