By BART NEWMAN BRONSON, MI, MAR. 5 Warmth and sun meant big fun as Log Road MX kicked off the District 14 Motocross season with a near-record crowd of 652 riders! The track was spot-on, despite the fact that more than 490 riders had turned out for Saturday's open practice. The 250cc A train was on the gas, with 17 of Michigan's fastest motormen on hand to do battle for the goler. Moto one was all Jason McDonald's, as the Sir Pizza/Tech-Care Suspension/Smith Goggles/Klotz Oil/Twin Airsponsored rider took the win aboard his Keith McDonald-tuned YZ426 thumper. Pro-Action of Michigan rider Jon Logan turned more than a few heads with a strong second-place showing in his first-ever 250cc A moto, keeping the ever-speedy Maple City Cycle/MCR/Wisner Suspension-backed Dave Gaylord at bay. Another B-rider transplant, Derek Rose, debuting his AI Gaskil Honda/Panic Rev Suspension-backed CR250, was fourth, ahead of Swick Kawasaki/Pro-Action rider John Penrod, who carded a fifth to kick off the day. In moto two, Gaylord was out front early, with McDonald hugging the inside line to take the lead as the pack headed to the big infield tabletop. Logan went wide, while Kohler and Rose went inside, making them three abreast going through turn one, with Penrod not far off the pace. McDonald was quick to take the lead, and he took the moto win despite some pressure from Gaylord, his main competition. Penrod, not happy in fifth, began his move to the front, quickly displacing Rose on lap two with a sweet inside move through the sharp left-hander before the finish. Never one to miss out on an opportunity, Rose latched on to Penrod's rear fender. By lap three, Pe~rod and Rose were knocking at Logan's door and waiting for the opening they needed. When it came. Logan found himself on the wrong end of the threeman race. McDonald won the race and the overall. Gaylord rode a swift race to take second in the moto and second overall. Logan's 2-5 was good enough for third overall, with Penrod (5-3) and Rose (4-4) rounding out the top five. ~ PRO~T A'.A- Jii> -- t's'Yi1 ~~GALFER ~ M VI:' Q3'-t D' OURV ~ LJ!E5~~tt~~~~U EVENT INFORMATION Sat April 15: Open/4-Stk Practice 8am - 2pm • Overnight Camping Sun April 16: Gates Open 6am Race 9:15am • No Membership Sportsman $30/class - Pro $85 • Min 6 riders/class: Nov,lnt,Ex,Vet Classes: 0-300; 301- 455; 456-650; Age Groups 25-60+, DualSport ~A;~ $4500 Pro Purse • Info 909-880-3090 - www.glenhelen.com @) Located just North of San Bernardino· Take Palm/Kendall Offramp West off 1215 Gate Fee $10 Adults • 6-12 $5 • Gates Close 10 PM Sat "1999 WORLD TRIAlS REVIEW" Full Action Highlights from the FIM World Trials Championship Series (#2060) Tri:.lls is one of the most exciting and entertaining sports of modem times.
