Club ran round three of the Winter Millennium Series on the quarter-mile clay oval. Brad Holt led the 2505 off the line with his Bultaco in the first TT main, trailed by Wendell Clark, Gabe Slatton and Steve Ferguson. As Holt extended his lead, Slatton passed Clark and began to pull away. Holt took the win by a wide margin over Slatton. with Clark and Ferguson at the rear. In the Open TT contest, Pat Dwyer and Steve Fortune were out in front of John Garcia. Fortune pegged the throttle on his RS600 Honda at the entrance to the infield to take the lead from Dwyer as the pair raced through the right-hander and over the jump. Garcia slipped under Dwyer for second, pulling in behind Fortune and looking to steal the lead. Garcia stuffed inside Fortune as the pair hit the back straight, taking over the top spot going into tum three. As they came around to enter the infield, Garcia stuck his foot out a bit too far and Fortune quickly ran over it with his front wheel, slowing Garcia. Taking the lead back, Fortune hugged the inside at the transition to the oval, forcing Garcia to either slow almost to a stop or try the dry and slkk outside line. At halfway, Garcia stuffed his way inside Fortune to take the lead and pulled away. Fortune was second, with Dwyer third at the checkers. Dennis Voll grabbed the lead in the combined 250cc short-track main, leading Holt, Chris Apple and Slatton. Holt slid inside Vall to take over the lead on lap two, while Slatton ran up high to steal third from Apple. Holt pulled away, leaving Slatton and Vall to argue over second. Slatton slipped inside Vall for the runner-up spot, with Voll third, ahead of Apple and Steve Ferguson. Rick Reed led the Open Expert/Bomber main into turn one, but Fortune ran up the inside in turn two, and Cobb stuck a wheel inside Fortune coming onto the back stretch running three wide. Fortune and Cobb both held the throttles on deep into turn three, where Cobb gained the advantage and took the lead. Fortune's 600 was haVing a hard time grabbing hold of the dusty groove on the exit of the comers, while Cobb's trusty Shell P/W SR: I. James Roberts (Cob); 2. Tolon Hodgesoo (Cob): 3. J 2 A record number of riders and fans attended the opening round of the Kansas Off-Road Riders spring motocross season at Green Acres MX Park. Kawasaki jockey Wade Shook took the first holeshot of the year in the ultracompetilive 250cc Novice class, but a bobble in the infield on the second lap let Yamaha-mounted Marty Morland take the point, with Troy Tan· cayo close behind in second. Tancayo took the lead at the start of the final lap, leaving Morland to deal with the fast-approaching Shook. At the checkers, it was Tancayo with the win, followed by Morland. Shook crossed the stripe third. Jonas Hecker was fourth and William Love rounded out the top five. Shook was again the first through the first tum in the second moto, followed by Morland and Tancayo. The first lap came to a close with those three still showing the way. Randle McRoberts had moved his way up from eighth at the start to fourth. By the penultimate lap, McRoberts had passed Tancayo and was right up at Morland's rear fender. Two turns into the final lap, he made a pass stick that put him in second, where he would finish. A DNF in mota one, however, put him 15th for the day. Tancayo also made a last-lap pass on Morland, and coupled with his first· mota win. Tancayo earned second overall. Morland finished fourth in the moto and third overall. In the first division of the ] 25cc Novice class, Kawasaki pilot Josh Luinstra took the first-moto holeshot, followed by Yamaha riders Justin Gilman and Jason Miller. David Farris, John Briscoe and Jeff Walter caught Miller on the creek straight and went around him. By the end of the first lap, Luinstra, Gilman and Farris had started to pull away from the pack. Late on the second lap, Farris caught and passed Gilman, and that was the finishing order of the top three. Walter took fourth. Darren Powell was fifth. Luinstra was first out of the gate again in moto two, with Farris second and Luinstra's brother Justin third. Powell passed Walter, and they both got around the younger Luinstra before the first lap ended. Up front, Luinstra was starting to build a lead over Farris, and the two of them began to distance themselves from the race for third. Walter passed Powell coming onto the U.S. 56 straightaway, but he could not put any ground on him. By now Jake Leighly had entered the fray, and the three riders put on a great show for the fans. In the end, Walter was able to hold on to third, behind Luinstra and Farris. Powell held Leighly off for fourth. Walter's second-moto Green Acres MX Park: Wade Shook (19) leads Troy Tancayo (808), Marty Morland (3) and the rest of the 250cc Novice field on his way to the overall class win in Marion, Kansas.
