AMA Victory Sports Indoor MX Winter Series Rounds 11-12: Walters State Arena Jim Chester (8) taught the A classes a lesson at Morristown, demonstrating how to lock up four wins in a row. His pupils included Kevin Walker (859), Paul Justus (439), Nicholas Bums (796), et. al. the safety crew tended to Wilson and moved him off the track. The 125cc A restart was anticlimactic, in a way. Tesh again got the holeshot, with Banks, Justus, Chester, Boruff and Black waiting to pounce. Within five laps, Chester was in front, where he By BARBARA WILLIAMS PHOTOS BY LOREN WILLIAMS ---- MORRISTOWN, TN, FEB. 18-19 'm about twice as old as most of these guys [in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes]," said SCJzuki of Gastonia's Jim Chester. Nevertheless, "Old Man" Chester took everyone to school all weekend in Morristown, Tennessee's Walters State Arena, demonstrating what it takes to win all four runnings of the Pro classes, and also taking second in the AIIAmerican Jumping Contest. For his teaching duties, Professor Chester who is sponsored by Sinisalo, Barr's Competition, C Cycle Suspension, Bill's Pipes and Renthal - collected more than $2500 in Victory Sports purse. The closing rounds of the AMA Victory Sports Indoor MX Winter Series drew more than 500 riders. On Friday, the Yamaha Cycle Center/Pro Action Suspension/FMF/BalIzee/909-backed Kevin Walker grabbed the holeshot in the 125cc A main event. By lap two, Chester was in second and had set his sights on Walker. At the halfway mark, Walker got arm pump and couldn't hold on safeIy. He allowed Chester to take the lead and then grabbed on to his coattails for second. Jon Boruff returned to racing after a badly broken leg sidelined him for over a year. Always competitive, Boruff stayed close to Chester and Walker, finishing an impressive third for the opening 125cc A main event. Nicholas Burns and William Wilson filled out the top five. In Friday's 250cc A main event, Chester cannon balled to the win, trailed by Walker in second, Burns in third, Jered Black in fourth and Paul Justus in fifth. Saturday's 125cc A contest was a demolition derby. In the extended lull in racing action that resulted, Team Motorious.com Suzuki's Robby Horton provided color commentary, in partnership with announcer David Lindsey. AI Lane Yamaha's Daniel Tesh grabbed Saturday night's 125cc A main-event holeshot, pedaling hard to stay ahead of Chester, Walker, Black, Devin Banks, et al. Tesh had also won his qualifier, but after one lap he dropped his YZ125 in a turn. As the field blew past, Tesh recovered but had a lot of ground to make up. A few turns later, at the end of lap one, Wilson and Gregg Smith made contact and crashed on the far side of the finish-line tabletop. Wilson jumped up quickly to recover his Kawasaki, only to be nailed by another bike as it landed. "He was all right from the first crash, but then that other boy hit him smack in the helmet," related Wilson's dad, Hal. "When I first got over there, he wasn't moving, and the way he was laying, with his eyes rolled back, it didn't look good. But then in a little bit he came around and started fighting the EMTs, so I knew he was gonna be all right." Wilson spent a night in the hospital and came away with a giant headache, a black eye and a few stitches in his chin. Chester, Walker and Black filled the hole left by Tesh, while Justus worked on Banks on his way toward the front after a bad start. The next time around, Justus mysteriously crashed in exactly the same place. Two more laps of sloppy, distracted riding and near misses passed. Then the race was red-flagged while stayed for the rest of the 14 laps. Tesh held off Justus until late in the race and finished third. Black and Banks completed the top five. Boruff hung tough in sixth until the next-to-Iast lap, when he faded fast: however, he was uninjured and was able to finish. Saturday's 250cc A main was a Chester-fest from start to finish. Tesh's YZ250 had detonated the evening before, so he was sidelined. Banks, Justus, Boruff, Black and Walker swarmed after Chester, but he was uncatchable. The race was almost entirely incident-free, with only Ben Rutledge going over the first-turn berm on the start. Chester credited his Barr's Competition Suzuki with the win. "The bike was strong and allowed me to stay ahead of these guys," he said. "They're fast, and they don't cut you any slack. I like that." Justus finished second, and Walker worked his way up from a sixthplace start to claim the final spot on the podium step. eN Walters State Arena Morristown, Tennes...
