AMA Victory Sports Indoor MX Winter Series Rounds 9-10: Calsonic Arena Collinwood, Tennessee's Austin Risner topped the SOcc (4.61 class at the ninth round of the AMA Victory Sports Indoor MX Winter Series, held at the Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville, Tennessee. By BARBARA WILLIAMS PHOTO BY ROB HACHTEN SHELBYVILLE, TN, FEB. 11-12 uzuki of Gastonia's Jim Chester was "The Man" at rounds nine and 10 of the AMA Victory Sports Indoor Motocross Series at Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Chester mopped up in all four Pro main events to bank a Victory Sports purse totaling more than $2400 for his romps in the 125cc and 250cc A classes on both nights. Some 350 riders were on hand for the Friday show, forcing two 125cc D divisions to be contested. Both divisions received awards and series points. Alabama's Clark Stiles - backed by Sarge's Cycle, Axo, Oakley, Bridgestone, Wiseco, Castrol, Renthai, N-Style, Acerbis, IMS, Boyesen and Works Connection - got the holeshot in Friday's 125cc A class, with the Dal-Kawa/Pro-Actiq,n/Michelin/HotShotz Graphics/Bill's Pipes/ Gaerne-supported Paul Justus and then Chester in tow. The three pulled 62 MARCH 22, 2000' G Y G I away from the pack as they traded plastic. Near the halfway point of the 14lap event, Chester - who is sponsored by Suzuki-Kawasaki of Gastonia, Sinisalo, Barr's Competition, C Cycle Suspension, Bill's Pipes, Renthal, PJ1, Hammerhead Graphics, Smith, Ceet, Shoei, Bridgestone, Works Connection, Baker's Cycle, Ballzee, White Brothers and EBC - got by Justus in the whoops and set out after Stiles. A couple of laps later, Chester pulled inside Stiles, getting the position, but Stiles had the line in the next turn and went back into the lead. All the while, Justus was in position to capitalize on any mistakes they made - and sure enough, a few turns later Stiles fell in a turn, handing Justus his opportunity with a ribbon on it. Chester and Justus went on to finish e n e vv s first and second, and Stiles recovered to finish third. Texas rider Kyle Williams absconded with the holeshot in Friday's 250cc A final, but his advantage disappeared going into the second turn. Chester shot by on the inside line and turned the wick up, trying to get away from the pack. Stiles also passed Williams on Chester's momentum and set out after the leader. Stiles worked on Chester for the whole first half of the race, and at the halfway mark he passed him coming out of the whoops. Chester railed the next turn and was back into the lead. On the next turn, they were both put to the outside by a lapper, and they traded stickers getting around him. In the next turn, Stiles made a serious attempt, taking the inside line, but Chester held strong and held on to the lead. Chester then dialed it up another notch and put a few bike lengths between them. Justus had gotten a terrible start and was coming through the pack. At the end, it was Chester, Stiles, Williams and Justus, as the Dal-Kawa rider from Hendersonville, North Carolina, ran out of time for further advancement. Chester was asked if his experience on the PJ1 Arenacross circuit had helped his riding. "Yeah," he replied, "I think it makes you quicker, especially in a small arena. Not that Shelbyville is small, but you have to think faster at those National races, because the course is tighter and the guys are more competitive. Going for that prize money, y'know, that makes you more aggressive. The moves are the same, and if you get them down on the arenacross tour, they stay with you wherever you race."
