Whatever you want to call it, round
two of the AHRMA/Progressive Suspension Historic Cup Series at Daytona International Speedway has
become a Bike Week institution,
despite the fact that attempting to
recreate motorcycling's golden age
aboard ancient equipment might
make the approximately 650 entrants
who descend upon the hallowed high
banks for two days to be considered
worthy candidates for another type of
institution.
But they come anyway, from all
corners of the country, and they have
been for nearly 20 years now. Young
riders and old riders, high-buck and
no-buck. And whether it be considered only as round two in the summer-long Historic Cup Series tour for
the AHRMA points chasers, or the
beginning and end of the motorcycle
racing season for others, Daytona is
considered to be a special place.
MONOAY
AHRMA bills its brand of motorcycle racing to be more of a rolling
monument to the machinery of yesteryear than actual competition.
Unfortunately, that rang especially
true on Monday, as either mechanical superiority or mechanical
failure equated to abnormally dull action at
the speedway. In
fact, save for interesting lead battles
in the combined
250cc GP/Class C
event, vintage racing
fans had to wait for
ihe last race of the
day before getting
the chance to view
an incredible threeway dice for the Formula 750 class
win.
In that battle,
Pat Mooney

winning the Battle
of the Twins Fonnula
2 race on a Harley-Davidson.
Mooney also won Classic '60s on
a Norton.
