@fiJ1YlD0 (lD[?;;B{] {]@ (lfiJ0{]@0{] With both he and fast qualifier Teny Poovey burning in under the four-lap Daytona qualifying record of 1:19.98 during the four-lap scratch heats held earlier in the day, it was a pretty safe bet that one of the two former Daytona Short Track champions would earn the pole for the Hot Shoe main event, provided they won their respective heat races. That's the way it worked out, perhaps only because Davis' heat race was actually the first to post a time. Poovey was out front and flying in the first heat race when the red flag was thrown after Jeff Landrum crashed late in the first 10-lapper. AMA officials deemed the race complete and declared the Texan as the winner, with Mike Varnes finishing second. Because of the red flag, no time was given, however, dropping Poovey to fifth in the main event-qualifying lineup. Davis didn't waste a good opportunity, taking command of the second heat race right from the start and running away from a second-place battle between J.R. Schnabel and Chris Carr to take the win and post a time of three minutes. 14.546 seconds. "We're gripping pretty good," Davis said after the round of heat races. "The track might be going away, but I don't know, Jay [Springsteenj was right behind me in the next heat, and the track was pretty much the same for him. Three seconds ain't much in this deal." Davis was clearly squaring the corners during the heat race; a technique that he feels is the fastest way around Daytona if the conditions are right. "If the track is good and wet, with a little brush on it, then you can charge in hard and get it stopped," Davis said. "If it starts getting polished, then you slide all the way to the hay bales, so then you roll the bottom. But to get the real good low I 9s, you have to square it." Jay Springsteen posted the next fastest time 3: 18.065 in heat three, finishing ahead of Bryan Bigelow, and the track slowed from there, as Rich King's heat-four wins was off the pace. Another red flag was flown in heat five, dropping winner Willie McCoy out of the running for the pole. Joe Kopp posted a time of 3:23.357 while winning heat six. J.R. Schnabel, Steve Beattie, Greg Tysor and Mike Hacker all gained entry into the main event by winning their respective semis. they shortened it up, you know? Everybody was staying fairly close together. It was just so rough. My right forearm got pumped up. It was hard as a rock when I came in." He was followed home by pole sitter Will Davis, who was forced to deal with a bad start from the outside of the front row after his Mike Wheelertuned entry spun the back tire wildly at the start. Davis tried hard to make time on the leaders. but eventually settled in and motored to a steady fifth-place finish. "My dad always says that winning here on Friday night is a disadvantage anyway," Davis joked, and then added, "The track just changed tremendously. Everyone was just chasing their butt out there. I started on the groove, but we set there for 15 minutes and the dew got on the track. I spun all the way to the first corner, got hung out to dry on the outside and hooked a rut. Once we got squared away, I was about the same speed as the lead group. J"d gain on 'em a little, and then I'd catch a rut and lose what I gained." Former Daytona Short Track winner Brett Landes finished sixth, followed by hard-riding Willie McCoy, Mike Hacker and Michael Varnes. Kenny Cool beth rounded out the top 10. Greg Tysor, J.R. Schnabel, Rick Winsett, Steve Beattie and Bryan Bigelow were 11 th through 15th respectively, with reigning AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr carding a last-place finish after crashing out of the main event. eN Daytona Municipal Stadium Daytona Beach, Florida Results: March 10, ZODD HEAT t (10 laps: 10 riders, top two transfer): I. Cr.ig Estelle (Rtx): II. David Uoyd (Rtx): To say that Ohio rider Gee Roeder " is spectacular to watch on a cushion track is an understatement, but those performances pale in comparison to his antics on a 600. Not one to normally throw a leg over the peppy singles, Roeder came to Daytona in the hope of getting in those few more points that could mean the difference for a top-five finish in the Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championships, and did he ever put on a show at the Hot Shoe event. After rebounding from an incredible crash early in the day, Roeder went on to blast his way to fifth fastest in qualifying. Then when the evening program began. he also crashed out of his heat race in spectacular fashion in turns three and four. He rebounded from that to start in the third semi, where the race had to be halted when he tagged the hay bales on the front straightaway, dragging a mass of straw out onto the track. Then, on the restart, after running around in the middle of the pack, Roeder was forced into an Evel Knievel style-jump over a hay bale that had been flung onto the front straightaway by another competitor. '"I'm just havin' a rough night, but I'm havin' fun," Roeder said. "The way that I hit that bale, I think that maybe I should go do the Supercross tomorrow. The bike's working real good. I am comfortable on it, I just have to get settled down and get smooth. I just need to go slow enough to win." As evidenced by Rich King's performance in the main event, Roeder had the right idea, but he failed to make it out of his semi, forcing him to park it for the night. eye I e n e vv s MARCH 22, 2000 39
