As the gate dropped in moto one, Robert O'Hara got the jump on the field, putting his KX in the lead with the holeshot. Turner, Brian Larnick, Charles Karnaska and Mike Harris were in tow. With O'Hara out front, a four-way battle quickly developed between O'Hara, Turner, Larnick and Karnaska for the lead position. The group circled the long, mountainous track in tight formation, each of them attempting to secure the lead.
