Voyer sees his way to the CMXR win By KIRK CHANDl£R Elk Lake Can't beat those Deals By TIM McBRIDE ZIMMERMAN, MN, JAN. 30 The father-son duo of Mark and Adam Deal took home top honors in five classes during the DTRA-promoted ice races held on Elk Lake, hosted by the Ridgewood Bay Resort. High winds and very low temperatures made for a light rider turnout. The daytime high was 5 degrees above zero, and the windchill factor· well, that wasn't even funny. Nevertheless, the Deal family - Mark and Terry and their son, Adam - made the effort of competing in tough conditions well worth it. Seven motorcycle classes were featured, and the Larson Cycle Supply-sponsored Deals virtually cleaned house, winning five of them. Mark Deal won the Over 30 and the Open B class - which, incidentally, are the fastest classes in the program ~ and he also won the Over 40 class. His toughest competition came from the captain of Martha's Ice Racing Team, Joe Tromberg, who won the Open B heat race by passing Deal on the first lap and racing on to a comfortable victory. Deal, however, turned it up a notch in the main event, coming in ahead of Tromberg and a hard-charging Paul Anderson. In both the Over 30 and Over 40 classes, Deal was closely chased by Lake Martha's Jeff Milbrandt. "It was tough trying to make it out today, but it was worth it," said Deal afterward. Mark's J 5-year-old son, Adam, rode his father's CR500 in the Open Beginner and Open C classes, but he needed a little help wh.ich came in the fonn of a gallon pajnt can. Because of Adam's diminutive stature, his feet dangle helplessly off the ground while sitting on his father's Honda, making it tricky to position himself while sitting at the starting line. His mom, Terry, places the paint can on the ice next to him so that Adam can balance himself with his right foot while waiting for the signal to start. It's obviously a pretty good system, because Adam got the holeshot and raced to victory in both of his events - not too bad for a shy teenager who almost didn't show because, in his own words, "It was so cold, I didn't even want to get out of bed this morning." VII' S CARLSBAD, CA, JAN. 16 On a cold, rainy Southern California day. CMXR kicked off the 2000 MotoPro Winter Series. The racing was wet and wild, as rain kept the normally dry Carlsbad track soaking wet all day long. When all was said and done, the Vet Over 30 classes had the most survivors, and Duan Voyer had the win in the Vet Over 30 Intermediate class. The first Vet Over 30 class start took off from the wet concrete starting line, and as the pack funneled into the first tum, the third- and fourth-placed riders locked bars, causing a gnarly, end-over-end crash that took out five riders. The red flag was thrown immedjately. Everyone involved walked away from the inci· dent. When the pack took off for the restart, Duan Voyer took the second holeshot of moto one, followed through the mud-bog first tum by Glenn Cunningham, Mark McPerry and Novice-class leader Bob Lloyd. Passing was nonexistent, due to the one single groove that had been built up during the morning practice session; almost all the position swapping that did occur was due to crashes. As the front pack of Intermediates came around on the third lap, Voyer was ahead of Cunningham. McPerry was a couple of seconds back. The Novice leader, Uoyd, was running just ahead of Intermediate Woody Carlson, who in turn had the second-placed Novice rider, Mike Brownfield, on his yellow rear fender. The fourth lap of the five-lap race was the deciding factor in the race. As Cunningham passed the Suzuki rider in lapped traffic and pulled a sizable margin before the white flag fell. Cunningham cruised to victory on the final lap. Voyer finished second, right ahead of the charging McPerry. Lloyd left the Novice class in the mud for hjs first moto victory. A ways back in second was Brownfield, and third went to Yamaha-mounted Russ Prior. The second-moto holeshot went to Voyer, followed once again by Cunningham and McPerry. This time, Lloyd was buried within the Novice pack, while Brownfield was hitching a ride with the Intermediates. Voyer distanced hjmself from Cunningham and was ready to put a new trophy on his mantel. Cunningham seemed to be riding a consistent race instead of crashing his way out of the points race in the first round. As the Intermediate class was cruising the remaining laps of the race, the Novice leader, Brownfield, was caught from behind by Lloyd, who dogged Brownfield all the way to the finish, though all his pass attempts were in vain. Voyer took the win in the Intermediate class with his leisurely Sunday muddy ride. Cunningham took second, and Carlson finished third. Results 80 BEG: 1. Jccob Mason (Yam); 2.
