AHRMAISpeed & Sport National TrialslMX Series Rounds III: Speedworld Motorplex By beside the MX circuit. For the third year in a row, Southwest Montesa's Jared Bates was the trialmaster for the event. However, unlike the past two runnings, there was no rain in the days prior to this event, which made the sandy climbs quite a challenge. Bates threw some tough sections at the Modern Classic Expert riders, resulting in a 41-point score for winner Ryan Dickson (Montesa 348 Cota). who edged Yamaha TY250mounted Alfredo Rodil by just four points. Both riders have just recently moved up from the Intermediate ranks. Suzuki rider Jim Smith was third, just three points behind. Former NATC National Trials champ Curtis Comer rode his Puch-engined Dalesman to impressive cleans all day on the same Expert line and won the Classic Expert division. The largest class of the day was the Modern Classic Novice division, where Gary Cochell and Rick Wheeler both ended the day with clean cards. Cochell took the win via AHRMA's "oldest rider" rule. Tom Horton and Mike Aken tied for third, with a single point each, Horton taking the show spot in his first-ever AHRMA trial. For the record, Wheel~r finished ahead of traveling partner Horton. Premier Lightweight action saw Jeff MATT HILGENBERG wmMANN, AZ, FEB 5-6 he American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) kicked off its year 2000 season this weekend with the Speed & Sport National Trials and Motocross Series doubleheader, held in perfect winter weather conditions near Phoenix, Arizona. Promoter David Boydstun, of AMS Racing, ran a seamless event, and even took time out of his busy days to win the Modern Classic Intermediate class in trials and the Classic 500cc Expert MX division. Speedworld Motorplex owner Dan Mathews and track-building expert Del Brown gave racers an excellent, vintagefriendly circuit that was long enough to give lap times of over two minutes. There were fast sections, off·camber turns, and nicely shaped jumps that gave the four-inch-travel brigade smooth landings. The great track, weather and Boydstun's crack team of workers made the 320-entry event go off with nary a hitch.
