AMA Mid South Championship Winter Hare Scramble Series Round 9: Boxhollow Hare Scrambles Bv DEBBIE ALLEN NEW JOHNSONVILLE, TN, FEB. 6 ith some 227 riders, round nine of the Pirelli Tires/Parts Unlimited/Moose-sponsored AMA Mid South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series featured a surprise: Mike Kiedrowski, four-time AMA National Motocross Champion, who entertained Mid-South riders with his quick riding style while practicing for the GNCC. "I really enjoyed the track - it was a little bit tight. and I had to concentrate on how wide my bars are," Kiedrowski said, adding with a laugh a comment on the many trees he encountered while on the trail, "I fell about four times, and I stalled twice. This was my second hare scramble ever. It was a good run, but my main focus is on the GNCCs." He flew his Suzuki DRZ400E around the first corner and through a small creek bed. His back tire grabbed hold of a root as he took a tight turn, and four bikes passed him on an outside line. Sarge's Cycles/Big Gun/Moderne Tire/Cycle Path-backed Ricketts caught up to Performance Cycles and Accessories of Dalton/IMS/MSR-supported Gary Hendricks and Answer/ Cycra/Silkolene/Tsubaki/ Acerbissponsored Jeff Cregg, who had gotten the holes hot. Cregg had problems with his front forks and fell back. "The first lap was rough," reported Ricketts. Rocks, roots and ice were buried under leaves, making the course difficult. Most riders went down more than once. AA rider Rodney Judson started dead last but wound up in first place by the end of the first lap. "I just wasn't in any hurry (off the start), and things were working out for me," said the O'Neal/Beaver Creek Cycle/Scott USA/PC Racing/ Tireman USA-sponsored Judson. Judson came through the score tent first, 36 minutes after the green flag. He rode a smooth first lap, but there were three more laps to go, and Ricketts was directly behind him, with John Roth and Hendricks following. The next rider through the score tent was 250cc/Open A champion P.A. Allen, with Mike Kiedrowski right behind. Allen tried for fifth place overall by the end of the first lap. While most AA riders were falling down, the Oakley/Pro Action of Kentucky-sponsored Suzuki rider did not. He rode conservatively on his first lap - and then crashed twice on each remaining lap. Kiedrowski didn't battle with Allen; as a matter of fact, Kiedrowski let Allen pass him once. Kiedrowski's battle was mainly with the trees. "When he [Kiedrowski] wanted to get around me," Allen said, "he let me know real quick. I tried to keep up with him, but he's fast. He will be good for the GNCCs." On the second lap, Ricketts grabbed the lead a mile before the check. Judson let him pass so he could follow, but there was no keeping up; Ricketts just took off. Kiedrowski rode this lap faster than Roth or Hendricks, but they managed to come through the score tent before him, due to Kiedrowski's skirmish with the trees on the first lap. On the third lap, Judson made his way into first again. "I think Ricketts was having problems, because he simply waved me by," said Judson. Hendricks was in third, Roth in fourth, and Kiedrowski in fifth. "My front master-cylinder bolts came loose [on the third lap]," Ricketts reported, "and I had to stop and tighten them by hand. I had to stop three times to tighten them with my fingers." At the start of his last lap, Ricketts made a quick pit stop and then he was off. Ricketts came through with a minute lead while Judson grabbed second place, and third place overall went to Hendricks. Allen was the first 250cc/Open A rider. He claimed seventh overall, while Mike McCrea, the 200cc A winner, took eighth overall. Clint Robinson won the Four-Stroke A class, and Phillip Barker claimed first place in the Senior A class. Most riders said they liked the challenge, including Steve Ezell, who had a good start and stayed out front without going down to claim first place in the Vet A division and 12th overall. "It was a good, tough course, and I had a lot of funl" enthused Ezell. "But I had some close calls." Heath Robinson (the 200cc B winner), John Stolz (the 250cc/Open C winner) and P.aul Combs (the winner of the Beginner class) came through the score tent wifh a seven-minute lead on their opponents.
