Palmer in the green at Firebird Sprints By MICHAEL Ross CHANDLER, AZ, JAN. 29·30 "1 was tired of not winning, so I went for it," said a tired but happy Rory Palmer after winning his first Unlimited GP race during round two of the CCS Southwest Sprint Series at the Firebird West track. "I put on a new set of slicks, and my plan was to pass everyone by the lend of the] first lap. When I did that, I knew I could win it." In addition to collecting $500 for his win, Palmer also set the track record for the small~ er Firebird West track run in the clockwise direction. The record now stands at 1:00.80, smashing the old mark of 1:03.5. Even more amazing than his win and his track record was the fact that the Mesa man did it all on a 600cc Supersport Suzuki, humbling a number of riders of much faster bikes. Although CCS usually races at the J .6mile-long Firebird East track, that one was not available, so Firebird regulars found themseives at the much tighter I.I-mile, 10-turn Firebird West track. CCS has raced here before, but usually in the counterclockwise direction. To make things interesting, CCS officials decided to run the track in the opposite direction, and that left the door open for the possibility of setting a track record in that direction. Many took a shot at dropping the record, but it was Palmer who was quickest at day's end. Palmer and the big winner during round one, James Romero, went at it in the GTO race. Romero got the start and led the early laps, but Palmer took over on lap four and held the lead until lap J 2, when Chris Greve decided that he needed to be up front. Greve was riding a Yamaha RI that he had prepped just the day before while awaiting the delivery of his Honda RC51. At the halfway point, Greve led, but Paimer and Romero were right on his rear fender, and the West track is so short and tight that lapped traffic is a constant factor. With 10 laps to go, Greve ran into some of that lapped traffic, got off line and crashed. This miscue handed the lead to Romero. Palmer took second place 8.7 seconds later. While Palmer and Romero dominated most of the Heavyweight action, Trent Feltman put in an outstanding performance to win the Middleweight Supersport race over Mike Noschese. That loss motivated Noschese to notch hard-fought wins in the Middleweight GP, GTU and Middleweight Superbike classes. In the Lightweight class, Laroy Montgomery and Scot Welch were aiways up front. These two met several times over the weekend, with Montgomery crashing once and injurying his knee. Montgomery said at one point that he considered going home but decided instead to stay for the rest of the day. Welch led at the start of the Lightweight GP race, but he traded the lead with Montgomery for the entire 10-lap sprint. Welch took the lead for good with a lap to go and scored the win. Aztec Family Raceway Green beans 'em By GREGORY K. CORNS COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, JAN. 2 Some 80 die-hard motocrossers came out of hibernation to welcome in the new year and battle the elements at the second round of the Winter Combat Series at Byron Wolfe's Aztec Family Raceway. As the mercury steadily rose out of the 30s, Rocky Mountain Cycle Plaza/Racer's Edge-sponsored Chad Green stayed warm aboard his 2000 CR250 in the subfreezing temperatures and took the win in the Open Novice class. With the remains of the previous night's 5· inch snowfall outlining the circuit, the gate dropped on the 17-rider Open Novice class, and B-Line Graphic's Richard Martinez outpowered the field with his KX500 for the holeshot. Yamaha-mounted Matt Hartman, Green and fellow Rocky Mountain Cycle Plaza rider Randy Johnson gave chase. As the riders quickly adapted to the frozen and slippery conditions, where traction control and finesse was the name of the game, Johnson assumed the lead on lap two and stretched out a threesecond run on Martinez in second. Landing a one-two punch, Red Riders' Green and Adam Featheringill railed past Martinez for second and third for a three-way Honda sweep at the checkers. Hartman also got by Martinez, but Hartman spun out in a corner near the end of the moto and slipped to fifth. Johnson enjoyed an eight-second lead at the finish, as Green and Featheringill crossed the checkers only seconds apart. Veteran rider Martinez once again showed the youngsters the fine art of holeshots in moto two, as the 36-year-old grabbed a handfui of big-bore power and set the pace for the opening lap. Green, Adam Sauer, Thomas Kapaun and Johnson pursued, all within pouncing distance. Johnson wasted little time hopping into third. Featheringill moved up through the pack and ran bar to bar with Kapaun for fourth. Until midmoto, a blanket could have been thrown over the top three as Martinez continued to be hounded by Green and Johnson. On lap four, Green blazed through the whoops with a pass over Martinez. Realizing the overatl was at stake, Johnson jumped past Martinez as well to remain within a second of Green. The two front-runners picked up the momentum as they diced their way through the lappers. Johnson gave it all he had to get past Green, to no avail. Featheringill reeled in Martinez and made his way past for another Honda sweep at the checkers. Kapaun slipped out of the top five three laps from the finish and handed the position over to Yamaha-saddied Robert Quein, who finished sixth in the first moto. Green, the 1999 Rocky Mountain Motocross Association Summer Series and AMA District 25 State Championship Series Open Beginner-class champion, wrapped up the overall with his 2-1 performance and is off to a good start in the Novice class in 2000. Johnson took second, with FeatheringiJI, Martinez and Quein rounding out the top five. .. U .. (BMW). ftVL SPTSMN: J. Michael Ross (Hon); 2. Thomas Krause (Hon); 3. Roger Coyle (Kaw); 4. Other winners included Ron's Cycle Land/Cartwright Heating and Air~sponsored Brandon Cartwright, who led from flag to flag to take the Open Expert win, and Fat's Cycles A.J. Eslick, who made a last-lap charge to take the win at the line In the Mad Dog Mini contest. In the] 25cc main event, the initial start was red-flagged when Terry Epperson went down and both Cory West and Jeff Bostic missed the start due to a lack of communication between the track crew and riders. On the restart, West grabbed the holeshot, with Bret Sowders in tow. Ryan Cheatum was third, with Epperson and Bostic giving chase. In the middle of the race, Bret Sowders, who had been catching West, pulled out due to mechanical problems. West took the win, followed by Cheatum and Epperson. In the 250cc Amateur class, Mike Bauer had trouble at the start of the race, but he was CRC champions honored BY GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, JAN. 21 Palmdale's Ramada Inn was the site of California Racing Club's year-end awards banquet. Riders were honored for their top overall finishes in the recent five-race Sponsorship Series during the first half of the evenjng. and in the second half, tribute was paid to the top three points earners in each class from the 1999 racing season. As usual, track announcer Don Gossett did an excellent job as emcee, keeping the action flowing and handing out plenty of freebies and raffle prizes to the crowd on hand. Gossett also took time out to give credit to those in the eRC who are behind the scenes at the races and really make it possible for the club to put on nearly 50 races a year. Bauer followed in second and Sowders trailed in third. Sowders battled with Bauer, and the two began to close in on the leader, West. They ran out of time, however, and the checkered flag flew as West took the win, with Bauer second and Sawders taking third. In the first of two Expert classes, Cartwright got the holeshot, followed by Eslick on his TPR/JP Cycles-sponsored Yamaha 500. Mike Hinds and Victor McAnally gave chase. Cartwright pulled away. Eslick got a little sideways and Hinds barreled his way through, and McAnally followed. Now Hinds was second and McAnaliy third, with Eslick fourth. McAnally then zeroed in on Hinds, and Eslick passed McAnally for third. At the checkers, Cartwright took the win, with Hinds a distant runner-up. McAnally was third, Eslick was fourth, and Joe Duvall rounded out the top five. In the Mad Dog Mini class, Randy King got the jump on the field, followed closeiy by Eslick and Bauer. By halfway, Esiick was ciose enough to battle with King. Eslick tried everything he could to get past the experi· enced leader, but nothing worked until he made a last-ditch effort in turn four on the last lap.
