Round 2: Edwards Air Force Base Motocross Track
Reina Rules the Base!

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CA, OCT. 30
"T"he sandy, Desert Wheels Motorcycle ClubI P'"epped Edwards Air Force Base motocross
track played host to round two of the 17th annual California Racing Club/Galpin Ford/GMObacked Sponsorship Series. Honda-mounted
Ryan Reina seemed to get along with the shifting
sands just fine, as he collected overall wins in
both the 12scc and 2sOcc Intermediate classes.
Bill Smith led the field out of the drop-away
right-hand first tum to get the opening 2S0cc
Intermediate moto under way. Reina gated in
second but wasted no time getting around his
fellow Honda rider for the lead. Jason Parsons
followed suit by dropping Smith back to third
and closing to Reina's rear fender. Parsons had
his RM-Z4s0 within striking range for the entire
second half of the moto, but he had to be content with a runner-up finish. Smith greeted the
checkers all alone in third, followed by Anthony
Barbacovi, Jonathan Newman and Bryon Ward.
Barbacovi put his YZ2S0 into the point
position as moto two got rolling. Reina gated at
the back of the pack, but by the completion of
lap one he had joined Barbacovi, Smith,
Parsons and Newman in a fIVe-rider battle over
the top spot. Reina passed Newman and
Parsons, and then he was handed second place
when Smith got out of shape on an uphill. Reina
kept the throttle pinned down the back
straight to slip past Barbacovi for the lead a
short time later. Once out front, Reina easily
pulled away on his Axo/Dunlop/N-style-backed
CRF4s0 for a sweep the class. Parson
eventually climbed up into a second-place finish
for second overall, topping the 5-3 tally of
Newman and the 4-4 score of Barbacovi.
Reina returned to split moto wins with
Benny Breck in 125cc Intermediate action,
with Sean Kranyak posting a pair of thirds.
Zeal Racing's Adas Bakchis was on fire in
both the 12scc and 2s0cc Novice ranks, as the
Yamaha rider motored to four straight moto
wins. Kasey Morris turned a pair of great starts
into 2-2 finishes over a big field of 12Scc
Novices. Brent Reyes went 5-6 to edge out
Max Adams (9-3) and Tyler Enticknap (8-4) for
third in the final standings. Adam Enticknap
earned the second-place trophy in 2S0cc racing
on a 2-2 tally, followed by Wes Pierce (6-3) and
Ryan McAllister (7-4).
Bill Sauro was equally impressive on his Mid
Cities-sponsored Honda as he went four for
four to dominate both the Junior Vet Expert
and Vet Expert/Pro fields. Mike Crosby (2-2)
was runner-up in Junior Vet action, over Justy
Mendibles (3-3) and George laMonte (5-4).
Jon Zahrt looked strong on his way back from
injuries en route to a pair of second-place
finishes in the Vet ranks. Nick Mairose's 5-3
finishes got the better of Crosby's 4-4 score
for third overall.

CMC Trans-Cal MX National Series
Final Round, Day 2: Riverfront Park
The Dramas Conclude
By
JOHN BETHEA
MARYSVILLE, CA, OCT. 23
hampionship awards day at the CMC's 24th
annual Racetech/MTA West Trans-Cal
Nationals always evolves around Riverfront
Park's gut-wrenching final turn: a wide, multigrooved, l8O-degree right-hander that produces
some of the most exciting finishes anywhere.
The day before, two particular races began
dramas that spilled over into the series' final
sets of motos, and both invofved veterans and
former champions.
Chad Anderson of Upland, California, is no
newcomer to championship showdowns, having
already won several classes in both the Trans-Cal
and Golden State series in the past, and he had
won the important second 12Scc Intermediate
moto on Saturday to steal the overall from
Suzuki-mounted Ryan Kirk and carried that
momentum over into Sunday to sweep this day's
pair of motos for his first championship.
However, the J Jones/Engine Ice/Hahm/
TLD/Ready Filter Honda rider was still
smarting from having had his own 250cc
Intermediate win stolen in that infamous final
turn on Saturday. He and Yoshimura/RG3/
American Suzuki RM racer Erik Meusling of
Hubbard, Oregon, had ridden this whiteknuckler down to the finish.
"There were a couple of lappers in front of
us, and they wanted to get into the race,"
Anderson said later. "We all went to the inside
rut, and I ran into one and I fell over."
Bent on avoiding similar situations on Sunday,
Anderson didn't give his opponent a chance.
C

'" won all four motos today, so that's cool,"
said. Anderson, who at 18 is putting off a Pro
bid for another year, as he lost a lot of racing
time this season after crashing at the World
Minis and breaking his back.
In the other drama that began the day
before, Bill Rubly was vowing revenge for
another last-turn heartbreak on Saturday. His
tenific Over 30 Master battle with Sean Conley
was nearing its end in the first moto when they,
too, carne upon lappers. Hung up, Rubly's bid for
the win was blocked; instead, Jon Zahrt sneaked
in and nearly stole everything, passing Rubly and
missing taking away Conley's win by inches!
""ve never had a finish like that," said the
41-year-old Zahrt, whose bike had been
bogging on gas all moto long (a broken powervalve had been the problem); he later won the
second moto and garnered the overall.
"Ahh, damn!" was all Rubly would say of the
incident. "It's just a warmup for the Over 40,
anyway."
And warm up he did, gaining the Old-Timer
championship despite finishing third in this
day's final.
With his engine's power restored, Zahrt
won the Vet Master title.
