United States Youth Speedway National Championship Fast Fridays Speedway PHOTOS BY GEN MOORE Wells Wins Another Youth Championship Bv M. SOBER AUBURN,CA,AUG.26 Deigning United States Youth Speedway National Champion ~cky Wells matched last year's perfect IS-point maximum score to claim his second consecutive National Championship. When asked to describe the feeling of his impressive victory by track announcer Mike Rooney, all the soft-spoken champion could say was, "Ya, it's pretty cool." Krystal Cramer, who finished runner-up to Wells in last year's final, again finished second, with 14 points. Ricky Felicio was third with 12 points. Paul johnson was fourth after garnering I I points, two points ahead of his brother Mitchell johnson, who tied with Bryce Starks and Austin Novratil (or fifth overall. The opening heat of the event turned out to be the pivotal ride of the night, as Wells got the best start out of lane three and beat Cramer to the finish line. It would be the only point Cramer would drop all night. Northern California regulars Mitchell johnson, Felicio and Paul Johnson took the other three wins in the round. In round two, Bryce Starks got on the winners' board, Felicio got his second win, and Wells and Cramer took their usual checkered flags. Round three saw the vastly improved Ben Essary get his first victory after two forgettable rides in the first two rounds. Novratil garnered his first win as well, and then naturally Wells and Cramer ended the rounds with two more three-point rides. However, Cramer's was not without incident. as she had to battle from behind to overtake Starks in a race that was eventually called when Starks and Felicio fell near the end. After three rounds, Wells had his nine points, Cramer had 46 SEPTEMBER 28, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS eight, and Felicio and Paul Johnson were tied for third with seven points apiece. Round four saw Novratil and Starks both get their second wins of the evening before Wells and Cramer got their threepoint wins, ahead of Felicia and Will Hilgenberg. In the fifth and final round, Felicio kept pace with a win ahead of Cody Ciciarelli and Mitchell johnson, before Essary continued his hit-and-miss night with a three-point victory over Gino Manzares and Amber Felicio. That led to the final ride for Wells, who methodically dialed in another smooth win, ahead of Novratil and Starks for his 10th straight National heat win over the past two seasons. Paul johnson could not prevent Cramer from scoring the final heat win and, with it, her nearly periect 14-point total. Wells unintentionally summed up the immediate future of Vouth Speedway after the race by saying, "I'm only 14, so I guess I've still gotlWO years of juniors left." No junior/Youth rider has ever won four Speedway Championships. Yet. eN GoLD COUNTRY FAIRGROUNDS AUBURN, CAUFORNIA RESULTS: AUGUST 26, 2005 CHAMPIONSHIP: I. Ricky Wells Oaw) (IS points); 2.
