shootout at the Riding Rock Corral. The physically demanding upper-class sections took their toll, contributing to fJve DNFs in the class. zach Clement went out with a nasty crash, suffering bike damage, but the balance of the competitors all discovered that previous injuries combined with a bad case of clutch-finger fatigue couldn't be "ridden through" on this day. Regardless, Steven Deines was the class act of the day, posting a first-loop score of 17. With the rest of the class scores in the high 20s to 305, Steven was poised to win regardless, and he proved it by gapping Kyle by 30 points at the finish, Jeff Payne topped the Senior Intermediate class in commanding fashion. On a day where high scores were the norm, Payne posted a low (our-point score on his opening loop, gapping eventual runner-up Mike Stokes by three points. The Montesa-mounted Stokes matched Payne throughout the following loops, both finishing on three and zero, but the damage was done and Payne was not to be denied. "I just decided to try to do good today," said Payne, "and it worked out well." Russ Todd piloted his Beta to an uncharacteristic third on the day. A couple of first-loop snafus left him with 15 points and out of the hunt for the win, eventually finishing 10 points back of Stokes. Jarrod Tilton returned from the long summer break piloting a new Montesa four-stroke. The perennial front-runner had concerns about his ability to adapt to the new machine in its first competition, but they were for naught, as he handity won the Intermediate class. A missed section, and a subsequent IO-point penalty, seemingly knocked Tilton out of contention after the first loop, but a combination of solid riding and miscues by the competition allowed him to come back and secure the win. Class newcomer Mark Jacobson continues to prove he belongs, as consistent single-digit scores kept him in the running all day and second at the finish. The always-large Novice class was dominated by Scott Richardson, who finished with a total of two points dropped on the day, topping runner-up Drew Sinks by four points. Third belonged to Davis Scharich, the Gas Gas rider finishing another fIVe points behind. eN RESULTS JR A: I. Cole Anderson. JR B: I. Devon Scharich; 2. Garrett Leute; 3. Garrett Stokes; 4.
