Mlchelln/WERA National Challenge Series Round 7: Summit Point Raceway PHOTO BY ETECHPHOTO.COM Batey Takes the Point (Thrice) at the Summit By DAN SCHMITT SUMMIT POINT, WV, AUG. 1 t was another great race day in West Vorginia. as David Weber charged into the lead in the Open Superstock final, with Ben Thompson and Brian Stokes right behind. By the third lap. Marl< junge had taken the Vesrah Nielsen Enterprise Suzuki to second, and his teammate John jacobi had grabbed fifth. As Weber stretched out his lead, Stokes went to third. Weber was not to be denied, and he picked up the vlctO<)'. Charlie Coleman started the day with a tight-fought clash with Tony Palarie in the Open Novice Superstock race. In the 600cc Superstock Novice class, j.B. layman held a seven-second advantage at the end of the fourth lap but then suffered a mechanical problem. jeremy Helbing took the lead, with Dennie Huff and Bart DeFrancesco running second and third. Coleman and PaIarie again went to the front in the 750cc Novice Superstock final, while the battle for third heated up between layman and DeFrancesco. With a few laps to go. I Defrancesco snatched third. josh Herrin charged to the lead in the 600cc Superstock Expert final, with Keith Marshall and jacobi right there. junge charged to second during the third lap but could not hold back Brian Stokes. Jacobi came through tum nine to take second, but by the next lap he had fallen back to fourth. On the lap that counted, Stokes made the charge - but he came up short, as the young Herrin took his first Expert Superstock victory of the season. In the "big twins" race, Tray Batey again took the victory, this time over Cale Swiger. Sean Marston took the Novice win. David Yaakov produced a runaway win in the Lightweight Expert Twins race, as Sean Marston again won the Novice race, this time on his SV650. Vesrah's Batey took the 750cc Expert Superstock lead and left the two Hoosiers, Jacobi and Reuben Frankenfield, to battle for second. As Batey built a fIVe-second lead by the fourth lap, Jacobi made a textbook pass on frankenfield in tum nine to finally take control of second, while Batey took the win. It was a two·rider battle in the 600cc AHRMA AMS Racing National Vintage MX Series Round 10: The Farm By CLAY LIGHT S imply put, Californian Dave Coupe was in a class all his own at round 10 of the AM5 Racing National Vintage MX Series, held at The Farm. Coupe, who made the trek from Rio 050 armed with a trio of Honda Elsinores and a 1974 Yamaha YZ250, went four for four in overall wins, darning the Sportsman I 25cc, 250cc and Open~c1ass wins and then, for good measure, adding a win in the Open Age Expert class. Coupe won all eight motos he contested. Coupe, who last year was relegated to just a pair of overall wins after fighting off Grayson Hart, didn't have to deal with Hart this year; instead, Washington's Dallas Nyblod was Coupe's closest competition in two classes, but even the Northwest's premier rider couldn't pry loose Coupe's stranglehold at Chehalis this year. Coupe and Nyblod waged a wheel-towheel duel in the first Sportsman 250cc Expert moto, which was won by Coupe. Moto two was also a CoupetNyblod swapfest. But that was only for a few laps; Nyblod was running in Coupe's shadow, but a fall while running second dropped him to ninth place at the finish. CZ-mounted Californian Terry Bentley narrowed the gap on Coupe to place second in the moto and overall. Tom 64 McKinney used 3-5 finishes to net third overall, ahead of Washington's Mark Sullivan (5-4) and Nyblod (2-9). Coupe didn't get much rest in between motos, as the Sportsman 125cc Expert class was the next race on the line. Fatigue wasn't evident, as Coupe won by large margins in the two motos, leading former AMA Pro Andy james in moto one, and then putting substantial ground on Yamaha rider Jared lange in the second moto. James (2-4) placed second overall, followed by lange (3-2). BSA SOO rider Wesley Poole had a great day. Having earlier thumped to a pair of moo wins in the Sportsman 500cc Expert class (ahead of McKinney and Doug Raines), Poole then put on a great show in the Open Age Expert class. Poole's 2-2 finishes earned him second overall to Coupe in that class. Coupe again rode effortlessly to I-I finishes to earn win number three, ahead of Poole, Kamil Ginter, jim Rowand Bentley. Coupe's day was complete after an overall Over 40 Expert-class win dinched his four-victory tally. NybIod and McKinney - who was also riding a 1974 Yamaha yz - posed the biggest threats to Coupe, but in the end, it was again Coupe's day. McKinney (2-2) and NybIod (3-3) trailed Coupe in the 17-rider class. CN THE FARM CHEHAUS, WASHINGTON ItISULTS: AUGUST 14, 2005 (ROUND 10) PREH lIW NOV, I. Rick Wolff (BSA); 2. t.ury Robem (Jaw); 3. For 10 laps, this fleeing twosome went back and forth, but Herrin was there when the checkered flag flew. The story in the Novice race was Corry Warner's moving through the pack, picking his way to second but running out of time to catch j.B. Layman and finishing second. He was only a half-second back at the line, and he set the fastest lap in the race. Ben Thompson made a great launch to lead the 750cc Expert Superbike final, with Marshall trying to run him down. Then Marshall was out, and Donny Kelley moved up to second. Coleman and PaIarie again ran up front in the Novice race, as Warner charged to third on the ninth lap, over layman. In Formula One, Batey and Thompson led Weber and Strokes around this twisty, 2.2-mile roadcourse. Batey set a new track record at I: 14:220 during the fourth lap and gave himself a little breathing room. Weber moved to second. On the next lap, Batey lowered the record to I: 14:085. Batey came home with his third win of the day, and Stokes got by Thompson to take third. 01 Schank (Mal). PREH lIW EX; I. DavKl Robem (CZ); 2. J;m Cole (Hon).
