Team Zanotti - One, Two, Three!

LOOt, CA, JUNE 25
The Stockton Motorcycle Club hosted round three of the Cal·
I ifornia Cup Series on the blue-groove track known as Ladi
Cycle Bowl. This series' tide sponsor, A&A Racing, along with
Digger Helm, Rod Lake Racing, Zanotti Racing, Motion Pro,
Tsubaki, Saddleman Racing, Raceimage, K&N Fikers, High Roller,
M2R. Motorex, Maxxis
and several California promoters,
have all worked successfully together to bring this eight·race
premier series to California in 2005. With round three complete,
nres
there have been three different event winners. Danny Casey
topped round one, Sam Halbert took round two, and now Sam's
brother Jethro Halbert has taken round three. Almost back to
back, this series raced on June 18 in Placerville, on this night in
Lodi, and next moves to the famous Del Mar Fairgrounds on
Tuesday, June 28, for an Eddie Mulder WCVDTS·promoted
fourth round on a cushion oval track.
This week's racing was exciting, as 32 riders gave this track
their best effort competing for one of the 12 spots in the main
event. At stake was not only the money that this night's event
would pay but also points toward the prize money at the end of
the series.
Three heat races awarded six riders front-row positioning in
the main. John Hlebo got the holeshot and went on to the
checkers in the front of his heat-race's pack. Scott Corsetti rode
in the second spot, and behind him the Halbert brothers were
competing for position. Chad Cose also got the holeshot in his
heat race, in which Shawn Raggio earned the second SpoL Rick
Hocking, a racing legend in California, got his front-line start; the
52·year-old led his heat race from start to almost the finish, but
Joe Hernandez earned the win, catching Hocking with a handful
of Rotax power over the line.
The Halbert brothers finished their semi in the first two
positions, each earning a spot on row two for the main event.
Teammate Mikie Rush led his semi to the finish. Behind Rush,
Tony Souza and Nickle Moore iostled for second, but their battle
allowed Mark Key to take it. Stewart Barber got a jump off the
start and took advantage of his luck for the win, while Casey
worked into a second·place finish and a place in the main event.
In the main, as the light went from yellow to green, a red flag
was thrown, and Barber earned a cheater's-box position. On the
restart, there was no stopping the Halberts from worldng their
way into the front two positions. Competing with each other,
these two put on their own show, while Rush was working his
way through the pack for third place. Hocking and Casey
worked each other and the track hard for fourth. At the finish
line, it was Jethro Halbert with the win, followed by Sam Halbert
and Rush, all three of whom ride for the Zanotti Racing team.
Behind them were Hocking, Casey and Corsetti.

Suzuki Grand National Cross Country Amateur Series
Round 9: Parts Unlimited Wisp GNCC at Deep Creek Mountain Resort
Mullins Moves In on the Pros
By
DEBBIE AUEN
MCHENRY, MD, JUNE 26
harles Mullins. There's simply no better racer in the amateur
standings of the Suzuki Grand National Cross Country
Series. Now in sixth place overall in the entire series, he's only
going to get better. because after the GNCC summer break, he's
moving into the Pro class. And he's probably not going to ride
like a rookie, because this AM Pro Yamaha/Factory
Connection/Bridgestone/FMF/Pro Taper-supported racer has
been catching the Pros most of this year.
"I'm looking forward to moving into the Pro class," said
Mullins, "and I feel like it's an honor to be among them."
Off the start: of the Parts Unlimited event held at the beautiful
Wisp resort in Maryland, Mullins got a second-place start and
followed Team Green Kawasaki/Pro Circuit/Andrew's
Cycles/Dunlop/Moose Racing-supported Scott Watkins.
"It was a dusty race," said Watkins, "so I wanted to stay out
front. But it was really rocky, so we couldn't go as fast as we
wanted to go. There were a couple of tough, rocky hills
[mountains], and I lost my balance going up one of them. That's
where Mullins got by me."
Mullins maneuvered into first place and then started picking
off the Pros, some on adjusted time. others physically on the
track. On his firth and finaJ lap, he moved into sixth place overall.
"I really wasn't trying to work on my overall," said Mullins. "I
just wanted to stay ahead of my class. Then I saw Jason Raines
ahead of me, and I started pushing a little harder. I never did
catch him, so I just rode."
During the third lap, Aaron Wegner made his move for
second place. He passed Watkins, and the two held their
positions in I Ith and 12th overall.
"It was a good race," said Watkins. "No troubles. But I'm still
waiting to crack a top-10."
Travis Green from Vinton, Ohio. started getting arm pump
during his first two laps. He moved into fourth place on the
fourth lap and was charging for third when he twisted his ankle in

rut and had to settle for fourth. California-bound Ryan Powell
finished out the 2SOcc A top fIVe.
Two other GNCC Amateur from·runners clinched titles at
the Wisp, as Kawasaki Team Green's Andrew Matusek wrapped
up the 200cc A title with a third-place finish, behind Morgan
Green: and Thad DuVall completed his domination of the 200cc
B class. With a perfect nine-for-nine season, DuVall is ready to
battle Matusek in the A class when the series returns in the fall.
In aJl, there were 1.062 racers in attendance. Kailub Russell,
Cory Buttrick and Mike Wozny took the top three overall spots
in the Youth race. In the Sunday morning race, KTM debuted its
new XC line of bikes, and Jimmy Lewis took the overall win,
over Dick Burleson and Cody Mastin.
