MRANN Moose Racing Desert Series Round 2: WSRA Dead Camel Hare Scrambles Ochoa Beats the Dead Camel By JACK HANDY FALLON, NV, MAR. 5·6 esse Ochoa, the overall winner of round one of the 2005 J MRANN Moose Racing Desert Series, picked up where he left off to win the Dead Camel Hare Scrambles, hosted by WSRA. WSRA is known for laying out rocky courses, and the Dead Camel was no exception. Racers were treated to a 32-mile course that included rocks over all types of terrain, including sand washes, fast dirt roads, and some slower technical trail. The tricky start had competitors standing backward, straddling their front wheel. Over 40 Expert Paul Emerson got an incredible jump on everyone by hitting the magic button on his KTM 525 while simultaneously mounting his bike. Some said he had at least a quarter-mile lead on the pack by the end of the bomb run. After the bomb, racers headed out on a 4-mile loop that brought them right back by the staging area, and when the leaders came back around, it was Over 40 Expert Ochoa leading, followed by Jason Alosi, Emerson, Justin Soule, and former MRANN overall champion Sean Berryman. Ochoa and Alosi pulled away from the front pack and built a five-minute lead by the end of the first lap. The two swapped the lead several times between the two, with Alosi making a pass around mile 20 that would stick and bring him into the end of the lap in first, only about 10 seconds ahead of Ochoa. Berryman, Reece Honea, and Soule rounded out the top five. Roughly 25 miles into the second lap, Alosi crashed on a rocky uphill, and that allowed Ochoa to once again take control. Alosi did catch back up to the leader, but he fell again, leaVing Ochoa to finish out the second and third lap out front. At the end of lap three, Ochoa took the overall win, crossing the finish line with about two minutes between himself and Alosi. A few more position changes took place on the third lap, JUNE 2-5, 2005 The largest AMA event in the Midwest!
