Rory Krein brought home third overall. "I felt good," Garrison said. "The track was smooth, and the rhythm section was fun. It all came out pretty good." When asked if the track seemed easy compared to the supercross courses he's been on recently, Garrison admitted that it did. "The jumps and everything are really different at a supercross, compared to when I come back here," said Garrison, adding that he plans to ride the remaining West Coast supercrosses this year and then make a run at the outdoor Nationals in the 2S0cc class. Although the Pro-class wins were never in doubt, the Int~rmediate-c1ass outcomes could not have been more uncertain. Local standouts Aron Harvey and Wes Peebles took on out-ofstaters jordan Mockridge and Kyle Kent at the front of the pack, leading to undoubtedly the best battles of the day. In the end, Mockridge scored the 125cc victory over Kent and Harvey, while Peebles claimed the 2S0cc win over Mockridge and Ryan Eager. In Over 25 action, Eric Gillen scored the Intermediate-class win over friendly rival josh jacobs. Gillen also ~ent on to card an impressive fifth-overall finish in the 250cc Intermediate class. The top spot in the Over 30 ranks went to Kevin Truax, as he scored the Pro-class victory aboard his CRF450R. Darron Sturgeon claimed the second spot. RESULTS 50 (4-6) PRVTR: I. Brad Maga; 1. PORUM, OK, MAR. 5·6 pring has sprung, and the motocross racers have spring up in the Midwest, as the 2005 Oklahoma State Series kicked off at round one at Porum, Oklahoma's Hickory Ridge MX, Situated in a small valley, Hickory Ridge's black dirt, rutted corners, friendly smiles, and warm atmosphere seemed to be the selling point for many of the riders' families who attended. With the smaller bikes running on Saturday, jesse Braden's domination was set to begin. When the SScc Seniors left the gate for their first moto, Kawasaki jockey Gage Martin absconded with the holeshot and early lead, With Braden giving chase, Martin held the lead until they came to the downhill triple, where Braden quickly got by as he cleared the entire distance of the jump. The rest of the moto saw Martin trailing Braden all the way to the checkers. Rhett Cagle came off a bad start to finish third on his Yamaha. In the second moto, Braden put his Yamaha out front early and put it on cruise control, while the rest of the field played catch-up. Braden was so good, he cruised on to the checkers unchallenged. Skyler Teague used his S 58 MAY 4, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS The Hibernation is Over WITTMANN, AZ, MAR. 5·6 Braden, Hawthorne Shine Bright at Hickory Ridge KTM power to hold on to second, just ahead of Suzuki jockey Cole Supernaw. Braden's day didn't end there, either, as he went on to sweep the SScc Open class over the likes of Cagle, Teague, Supernaw, and Wichita, Kansas' Cooper Bitler. When Sunday morning's races got under way, it was time for the big bikes. One big bike in particular was the Kawasaki of former arenacross champion Dennis Hawthorne, contesting the Vet classes. Stealing holeshots like in days gone past, Hawthorne had little trouble making quick work of the field. Kawasaki rider Eric Sutton kept Hawthorne honest in the Over 30 motos by scoring a pair of seconds, while in the Over 40 class it was Duane Goodwin and jim Thomas rounding out the podium. "Oh, man, the ruts and the braking bumps here are awesome," Hawthorne enthused. "And when they water the track, it is perfect. The weather is perfect, and we're all here having a good time. My boy is riding today, and he's riding good, too." The younger Hawthorne, Kevin, finished the day with 2-2 scores, which was good for second overall in the 12Scc Beginner class. Also of note was Cory Green, who swept all Vet rider and all-around goad guy Dennis Hawthorne dusted off the cobwebs and won both classes he entered at round one of the Oklahoma State Series.
