World Championship Ice Racing Series Final Round: MCf Center Venegas Clinches His Seventhl By AMANDA URSINI WASHINGTON, D.C., FEB. 26 T he final round of the 29th annual World Championship Ice Racing Series was held on a cold Saturday night at the beau- tiful MCI Center in Washington, D,C. This was the first time the ICE/WSRA. Series had visited the capitol, in what turned out to be a memorable event for all in attendance. California's Charlie "The Edge" Venegas had Virtually wrapped up the overall points championship at the previous round in Trenton, New jersey. Venegas had been dominant up to this point of the series, winning every round except the $1 OOO-to-win Triple Crown event in Tucson, At that event, England's James "Mad Dog" Mann beat Venegas in a great main event. There was still a lot at stake tonight, with the third leg of the 2005 Triple Crown at stake, as well as the American Eagle trophy, The first round of heat races got under way with a wire-to- wire win by Mann, followed by Ronny Kemp from Cary, North Carolina; Charlie Cooley from Corona, California; and Eddie Martinez from Laguna Hills, California. Heat two was won by Shawn McConnell from Brea, California, He was chased to the line by Guy Jessop from Reno, Nevada; Bill Hermant from Sparks, Nevada; and Sean Billenstein, also from Reno. Venegas convincingly won the third heat, followed by john Grant from Georgetown, California; Binghamton, New York's Chris Strong; and Tyler Hansen from Missoula, Montana. The second round of heat races was highlighted by victory performances from Mann and Jessop. In the third heat, Kemp blasted out of the gate ahead of Venegas and led for 2 1/2 laps until his jawa mysteriousty quit running, allowing Venegas by for the victory. (Kemp's problem was later found to be electrical.) During the intermission before the final events of the night, there was the presentation of the Nitro Speedway Bike season's special awards. Tyler Hansen received the Most Improved Rider award, and a very deserving Charlie Cooley won Rookie of the Year honors. For the four-lap last-chance qualifier, McConnell. Grant and Kemp started on the first row, with Hansen, Cooley and Strong making up the second row. McConnell took the lead. In less than a minute, Kemp and Grant trailed him to the checkers and into the main. Cooley finished on the bubble, just missing the big frozen banana. In the final. Venegas shot into the lead and never looked back! In six qUick nine-second laps, he pocketed another two grand and his seventh World lee Racing title. FollOWing "The Edge" to the checkers were Mann, McConnell, Kemp, Grant . : ':. and Jessop, Venegas enjoyed a jubilant victory lap before the awards ceremonies.
