It probably kept some people away, but, despite the messy conditions, a few hundred showed up. including some celebrities who dropped by for a good workout. For instance, Ruben Xaus is probably one of the last guys one would expect to compete at a WOReS race - especially a sloppy one - but the MotoGP road-race star from Spain showed up with some brand-new Yamahas and signed up on Friday. (He was reportedly in the area primarily to visit Kevin Schwantz, who did not race.) However, Xaus readily admitted he was much more comfortable drifting works Ducatis at 130 mph than trying to slosh around in the muck. As one observer put it, "He's fallen off faster than any of these boys'li go today!" Though clearly out of his element, the road racer plugged away competently in the slime and survived to finish third in the 2S0F B class, behind series regulars Jonathan Weisman and Don BeaJe. Weisman, whose primary job is wrenching for Team Green star Descry Abbott. grabbed the lead right away on his Dunlop/RK ChairVO'NeaJ-backed KX-F and seemed quite at home in the mud as he doubled his lead over Beale's CRF every lap.
