CCS Florido Region Homestead-Miami Speedway Wood Unbeatable at Homestead By LISA THEOBALD HOMESTEAD, FL, FEB. 13 ric Wood won the main event at Homestead-Miami Speedway during the CCS Florida Region's opening event - without his muffler. Prior to the event, in an effort to give the spectators a better show, race promoter Henry DeGouw offered a bonus incentive of higher payouts for all of the Shootout entries who finished in the top 10 while running the race lOG? style" - or without their mufflers. Most of the racers entered in the Unlimited Grand Prix event did opt to accept DeGouw's proposition and removed their canisters; the exceptions were Team Desmomaniacs and john Costa's Ducati 996s, with their undertail exhaust systems (which are plenty loud enough, even with the mufflers). Florida racer Michael Rouleau, who was the weekend's undisputed holeshot king, nabbed the lead early in the Unlimited Grand Prix race. However, Wood was close behind on his GSXR I000, and after working his way through traffic, he was leading the way by lap two, After only a few laps, Eric's brother jeff was hot on his tail on his GSX-R7S0. By the halfway mark, the race leaders had settled into position. jim Pihokken finished third on his GSX-R I000, just ahead of the Kinetic Motorsports-prepared GSX-R I000 of Dave McEnery. Florida's own Pedro Valiente rounded off the top five on his R6. Eric went undefeated all weekend, finishing first in all three of his events. He also won the Unlimited Superbike and GTO races. The brothers Wood gave new meaning to the term "sibling rivalry" as they turned the GTO event into a two-rider fight for first place. After taking over the lead from his brother, Eric simply dominated the race, while Jeff pushed him from behind all the way to the finish. Pihokken finished third; he also finished second in Unlimited Superbike and is sponsored by Prieto Racing, Dunlop. Technic, Sharkskinz and Vortex. E VaHente dominated the Middleweight classes on his R6, taking home three first-place trophies: He won the GTU, Middleweight Supersport and Middleweight Superbike races. He is sponsored by Desmomaniacs, Cheetah Bodywork, GMD Computrack, Engine Ice and Right On Track. juan Moreau was the breakout Amateur winner of the weekend, taking home first-place trophies in all four of his races on his brand-new CBR600RR. Moreau was able to take over the lead after working his way through traffic in some of the largest Middleweight fields the Florida region has ever seen. He has teamed up with his older brother and fellow Expert racers to form the M. T. Pockets race team and is sponsored by A1pinestars and Apple Mortgage, among others. \ RESULTS AM GTO: I. Tulie Motocross Presler, Wearden Battling to the Finish By KAREN BOEHLER TULAROSA, NM, FEB. 13 \ A fith only two points races left in the sea(a two-day event to be held March 12 and 13), the competition was fierce at the Tulie Motocross on February 13. Going into the February races, 10 classes had the top two or three riders separated by less than seven points - and that didn't change much after the day's competition. A mere four points separated the top two Over 30 Amateur riders; and afterward, they were only separated by two, as Eddie Wearden of EI Paso, Texas, just edged Matt Presler of Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Presler closed the gap between the pair with two come-frombehind wins on Sunday; next month, he wants to lead from the get-go. "Hopefully, I'll get the start and won't look back, and I'll just win that way, and not have to get around him," Presler said. "It's a case of old school vs. new school," Wearden said, "and I'm way old school. All these kids, they jump real good, and I don't. I can make up time on them in the rough stuff or in other places, but unless you jump all the jumps and do all the obstacles like they're doing, you're not going to win. And that's just a fact you have to face at 45 years old." Presler, who's 32, also brought up Wearden's age when asked if the two-day finale would make a difference. "I don't know," Presler said. "He's (Wearden's] an older guy, and it's two races two days. It's hard on old guys like us, Yeah, it's definitely going to mix it up some, It's definitely going to need to come together with your A game for two days. And that's what it's going to take." Wearden didn't agree. "No, fatigue is not the problem - I don't get tired, I just don't do the obstacles; they're a difference," Wearden said, adding with a laugh, "It's called wussing out." Despite the age difference, both would really like to take the title. "I'm glad I was able to get a little bit closer, and hopefully next week I'll be able to do the Y Y son same thing: pull out front and win the championship," Presler said. The younger riders are just as competitive as their older counterparts. Nine-year-old Teddy McAninch of Edgewood, New Mexico, is in a fight for the title in two classes - the 50cc (7 -8) and 60cc (Through 9) classes. In the smaller-bike class, McAninch was tied with Albuquerque, New Mexico's Henry R. Anaya going into Sunday's race. However, the 9-yearold Anaya took first for the day, putting him two points up going into the final races. "It's going to be tough:' McAninch admined. "I'm going to have to put a lot of pressure on myself just to go faster," Anaya said, adding that McAninch is tough to beat "most of the time, when he puts it on with me." In the 60cc age-group class, Tyler Lindahl of Tijeras, New Mexico, led McAninch by four points starting the day, and by six after. RESULTS 50 (4-6): I. Isaac Jacques: 2. c.J. Chaparro; J.
