Justin Mastalka was also impnessive in the Pro By ROBERT BEAUPRE FERNLEY, NY, FEB. 13 haun Palmer has accomplished more in sports than most people could dream of doing, but he is now preparing to test himself once more in motocross. At round one of the MX West Spring Series, Palmer rode to wins in the 12Scc and 2S0cc Pro classes, and gained some valuable practice toward his confirmed intention of contesting this year's AMA 12Scc S national series. Palmer convincingly won all but one of his four motos on the day, and the loss was a narrow one, to J.L. Bitt in the second 12Scc moto. In that race, Palmer turned a suspiciously slow start into an impressive charge through a field of Pro contenders to come in just behind Bitz, whose 5-1 tally earned him second. behind Palmer. on the day. Palmer ruled the 2S0cc Pro class, as he rode to healthy leads in both matos, though he later acknowledged that he could have used more endurance. "I felt a little fatigued, but 1 just pushed as hard as I could." Palmer said. "You've got to ride with heart, you know? You've got to want it bad. I didn't feel that strong, but 1 pushed myself. trying to push through the fatigue to ride as fast as I could while still being in control." Tyler French took the final podium spot with a good ride. When the Youth gate fell, Jeremy Pendley, on his Yamaha of Doraville YZ, made sure Timm didn't win three classes, making a lastmoto charge against the fast Suzuki pilot. Justin Morris had a steady ride on his Kawasaki and took the third podium spot. The largest class of the day was the I25cc C class, and the racing was top-notch. Timm, on a larger Suzuki, took the win with a pair of runner-up results. Richie Gibson, on his Gibson Racing Pro-Circuit Kawasaki, won the last moto to earn second overall for the day. Honda rider Boyd Petersen took third overall with a lastmoto charge. Honda rider Cole Williamson ruled the roost for the overall 2sDcc Beginner win. Yamaha pilot Andre Perry won the final mota, but his first-moto finish held him back. Chris Anderson took his Honda to a well-earned third overall with a good ride. In the Women's event, Kayla Ergle took her Suzuki to the overall with a final-moto charge. Kristin "The Piston" Mullaney used her dad's Yamaha to win the first moto, clearing the big step-up to boot. (Her dad is hoping to get his YZ2S0F back.) Suzuki-mounted Mariah McNeill did the deal for third overall. The Over 35 class is grOWing as the racers age. Honda pilot Willie Phee took the top honors. Randy Riehl used his Yamaha to win the second podium spot. Another Honda rider, Steve Stratton, scored the final podium spot with a good ride. As always, the event ran smoothly and everyone was provided with some awesome racing. S4 race, claiming the Over 30 Pro victory and spending much of the day battling 12Scc-c1ass pilots Palmer and Bitz in the combined Pro matos. The 12Scc Junior class featured packed gates in two divisions. Tyler York, a recent area minicycle standout. debuted in the 12Scc-c1ass with a I-I performance in Division One that included big leads in each moto. In Division Two, brothers Steven and Chris Wear came in one and two aboard their Suzukis. In Mini action, Brian Sjogren and Jesse Masterpoo! battled throughout the day in the 65cc Intermediate and Super 65cc classes. Sjogren eventually claimed the win in both classes, but Masterpool ensured that Sjogren never had an easy time of it. Sjogren and Masterpool both looked ready to make the 6Scc class an interesting affair for: the CN remainder of the series. Angelo Yacovelli put his Honda at the front of the pack as the 45-minute race got under way. David Brickner was off to a good start in second place, ahead of Andrew Coates and Kyle Prelewicz. Pineda ran midpack on the opening lap but was quickly picking off his competition, and he was all the way up to third by lap three. Pineda slowly reeled in Coates and finally was able to make a mo·.. .e into tlie runner-up position at the 30-minute mark of the race. Prelewicz continued to hold down fourth, with Devin Higgins running a close fifth. Pineda set his sights on Yacovelli, and with the white flag waving he was successful in pulling off a last-lap move to take the win.
