> L Cycle City Promotions Arenacross Series Tulsa Livestock Arena PHOTO BY CHUCK BALL Stone, Kowalik Throw Down in T-Town By CHUCK BAll TULSA, OK, FEB. 12 F or the penultimate round of the Cycle City Promotions Arenacross Series, Tod Hammock and crew brought the races to Tulsa, Oklahoma, inside in the dry, warm conditions and out of the cold, damp air Mother Nature was dealing outside. With bright lights, a full crowd, and an immaculate Shane Schaefer-built track, the night appeared to be headed in a great direction. With Pros from all over the region in attendance, it was no surprise to see former regional arenacross champion Brian Stone on the gate. After a series of heats and a lastchance qualifier, heat winners Stone and Honda-mounted Eric Kowalik were due to face off. But they would have some stiff competition. Local hotshoe Jake Martin was aiming to make his presence felt, as were the local Blackwell brothers, Zach and Mark, and Arkansas rider Jon-Paul Powell, on his mighty Kawasaki. In the 125cc main, Stone nailed the start and immediately began putting distance between himself and the rest of the pack as they all battled for position. At the halfway mark, it was Kowalik and Martin moving the most dirt as they fought to catch Stone. It wasn't to be, though. and as the checkers flew, Stone took the victory. In the quarter-liter division, the face-off looked to be between the Yamaha-mounted the third straight. Ball was rolling through the pack, landing in first as they completed lap one, while Mann dropped to mid pack. Brandon Brignac moved into the top five, behind Ball, Cox, Pursell, Pizzuto and Brouillette. Halfway through lap two, Mann regained her composure and went to work, picking off riders. Ball began to gap the field on lap three, while Pursell held off Pizzuto for second. Brouillette was fourth, and Mann was challenging Brignac for fifth. Soon Mann outgunned Brignac and set her sights on fourth. With one lap to go, Pizzuto went down, and Mann passed Brouillette for third. Ball took the win for the sweep, with Pursell a strong second and Mann third. "I am getting used to the weather," Mann said. "The tracks in Sweden are usually frozen, so we use spikes in the tires. I like it here." Mann nabbed holeshot in the first Women's Open moto and began to pull away. Trying to keep up with her, Stad Brown, Jenna Schillage, Brittany Infield and Lindsay Escoyne all went down. Brown sustained the worst injury: She threw her shoulder out of its socket briefly, which sidelined her for the rest of the day. Schillage, Escoyne and Infield quickly remounted, but Mann was already gone with her technically correct European style. She looked as if she were riding cautiously, unsure of the traction, yet she lapped up to third place. Escoyne finished second, followed closely by Infield, Schillage, Kaci Simon and Hanna Escoyne. Martin and 125cc runner-up Kowalik. And as the riders blasted into turn one, Suzuki rider Brandon Hickman was in the lead, followed by Mark Blackwell and Stone. Quickly and quietly, Stone made his move and established the lead and then turned up the pace. With Kowalik and Martin again battling to move forward, it was Stone's race to lose. Lap after lap, Martin continually used his speed in the whoops to close on Kowalik, but at the midway point, a slight miscue by Martin allowed several racers to get by and gave Kowalik some room in which to operate, and he started to reel in Stone. With only a couple of laps to go, it happened: Kowalik caught Stone just before the finish line and made the pass. And with that, Kowalik sealed the deal and was the first to cross the checkers. After a hard-fought battle with the Blackwell brothers, Martin came home third. In the night's Amateur program, Oklahoma's Colt Nichols simply devastated the field in both the 6Scc (9-11) and ascc (7-11) classes. Aiso riding quite well was Justin Berry of Edmond, Oklahoma, as he won the 105cc Supermini and 250cc Intermediate classes and placed second in the 12Scc Intermediates. The greatest news of all, though, was the fact there were no injuries to report other than the occasional bump or bruise. A great night was had by all. CN Riding his potent RM-Z250, Missouri's Brian Stone used experience and good storts to win the 125cc Pro class and finish second in the 250s at Cycle City Promotions' Arenacross in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Leighton Ivey, also Yamaha-mounted, took second overall with a pair of runner-up finishes. Austin Sullivan used his Suzuki to win the final podium spot with a last-mota charge. The SOcc Open was "The Seth Harnishfeger Show." He brought his KTM down from Ohio and dominated both motos. Brady Moreland, also a KTM rider, used two second-place finishes to secure the second podium SpOt. Lem pilot Jared Huffman came in from Tennessee to take the last podium position.
