Mike Pontious put in the ride of his life in the combined 85cc Junior and Intermediate contest, as the Junior rider hung with the top Intermediates and almost beat all of them in the second moto. Pontious won the Junior class with a 2-1 tally, while "Flyin' Frace" took second with a 1-2 punch. Chris Kolde (4-3) took third, Jason's older brother Julian Doane (3-4) was fourth, and Mike's brother Jeff Pontious (5-6) took fifth. Andy Richards (I-I) won the Intermediate class hands down, Tyler Riehl (2-2) finished second, and Nathan Teel (3-3) took third. Austin Ullrich (4-5) was the fourth-placed rider, and Noah Bailey (7-4) finished fifth. Riehl came back swinging in the Supermini class, scoring a I-I, as Richards suffered problems in both motos and was unable to go for a double-class sweep. Teel (2-2) picked up second, while Bailey (4-3) finished third. Ullrich (3-4) took fourth, and Mike (6-5) rounded out the top five. RESULTS SO (4-6): I. Warren Higgins (Cob); 2. Southern Supermoto Winter Series Round 3: Ocala Gran Prix Go-Kart Track The Nick and Matt Show By JACKSON WHEELER OCALA, FL, FEB. 5 he original Fat Boy Racing teammates, Nick Daniels and Matt Pursley, reunited in Ocala, Florida, to put a smackdown on the locals at round three of the Southern Supermoto Winter Series. In Middleweight heat-race action, Daniels and Pursley, starting from the back row, hooked up early and freight-trained to the front by lap two. Daniels led all the way to the finish on his Innovative Concepts Honda CRF450, while Pursley settled in a very comfortable second, apparently getting used to his new Big Gun/RG3/Marin Cycle Works/ rentasportbike.com/Scotty's Speed Shop-tuned CRF450. Also putting in a good ride, and looking fantastic in the dirt, was Florida local Dale Hutto, aboard his 5uzuki DR-Z400. On the back row again for the Prestige heat race, Pursley shot into second place before the pack even hit the dirt section. With Daniels following, the pair were once again on a rampage, jumping into first and second before the start of the second lap. Pursley's comfort level with his new ride was on the rise, as he dropped precious time off his previous heat-race lap times. Pursley and Daniels stretched their lead to an impressive 10 seconds over the field, but then Daniels made a mistake that would haunt him in the main, tucking the front on the last lap, which put him all the back to last, while Pursley crossed the finish line first. Hutto hung on for second, though K.C. Wood hounded him all the way to the finish to take third. In the Middleweight main, with Daniels and Pursley on the front row, it was instantly apparent that this was going to be a race T 70 between these two former teammates and nobody else. Pursley grabbed the holeshot, but a mistake in the dirt handed the lead to Daniels, who proceeded to put a comfortable distance between himself and Pursley. It seemed this race was over, but near the end of the race, Pursley began to pick up the pace, pUlling up to Daniels' bumper. As the two rounded the second-to-Iast turn, two lappers, apparently confused as to what they are supposed to do while being lapped, pushed Daniels out into the grass, allowing Pursley to dive underneath and grab the win. Young Dan Rounding from Canada held off the locals to take the final podium spot. In the Prestige main event, Pursley grabbed the holeshot and ran away from Hutto. Daniels, mired in traffic, fought his way to second in four laps, only to find himself running alone. Pursley put in a spectacular ride, posted the fastest lap times of the day and breaking the previous track record by almost four seconds. Rounding rounded out the top three. Umbrella Girl (and Pursley's wife) Natalie Jackson rode brilliantly all day long and grabbed third overall in the combined Lightweight and Sport Supermoto final aboard her Marin Cycle Works CRF250R. MARCH 23, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS CMC Copperstote Classic Series Round 2: Arizona Cycle Pork SX Feverl By SHERI AMES BUCKEYE,AZ,FEB.5 he phrase "SX fever" best describes the mood at the second round of the 16th annual CMC Copperstate Classic Series, presented by Fox Racing - '~rizona's most prestigious motocross championship series." Arizona Cycle Park changed "faces," coming up with a new supercross-sryle track for Arizona racers. Round two of the series, sponsored by 5hift, The Pit Enterprise, AEO Powersports, Gordy's Bicycles, Apache Motorsports, Meyer Racing, Andrews Motorsports, and Bent Clothing, was a cure for that SX fever. Race day was all about close-quarters combat. The 125cc juniors were the first up to bat, with two divisions going at it for a spot in the main event. In the end, it was Douglas French, on his Bernie's Cycie/M2R/5cOll U5NBent Clothing-backed KTM, who took the overall win. The 85cc (7-1 I) class was the "Anthony Defazio Show. With a stacked gate, Defazio maneuvered his Palo Verde Suspension/Troy Lee Designs Kawasaki chrough some tough competition to wind up the show with a I-I finish. Grant Bolzan, on his Pro Circuit/Simpson/ The Pit Enterprise-backed Honda, got away from the pack in the 2S0cc Open class. Despite competition from some great contenders, Grant put in a stellar performance, finishing the day with a I-I tally. The older guys also showed up to cure their fever. Kelly Dearing, on his TSR Contracting Yamaha, led the Over 30 Intermediate class for the overall win. Bri Henry was a girl on a mission. She rubbed rubber and banged bars with Kyle Patnode in the 6Scc Beginner class. These two put on a great race. With some girl power behind her, the PJ I/Dirty Girls Kawasaki-backed Henry grabbed the overall with a 1-2 punch. T II RESULTS P/W BEG: I. Austin Pugh (Cob). Pfw (4.6): L Preston Ocogni (KTM).
