Rodney Smith (1) nabs the holeshot en route to one of his two class wins at round one of the CMC Golden Stote National Motocross Series. CMC Golden State National Motocross Series Round I: Sandhill Ranch D odney Smith demonstrated how to handle a special test, r\and he did it before a large contingent of racers and fans at the first round of the 2005 CMC Golden State National Motocross Series. hosted by Mota West Racing. He rode his well-prepared Suzuki (complete with bark-buster attachments) to two outstanding class wins. It seemed he was treating the six-lap motos as if they were just another "special test" at an ISDE event. Smith's successes in National Championship Cross Country and International Six Days Trial events are legendary, and he left no doubt that enduro and Six Day Trial events are not for mudders, slow slugs or tractor riders. Hot on his heels in every moto was Curt Wilcox, who also has established a great record in enduro and trials. In their wake was a hot group of strictly motocross racers who might have found it difficult to comprehend how two not-quite·so-young enduro riders could go so fast. Smith has been Grand National Cross Country Champion five times: 1998, '99, 200 I, '02 and '04. He has also put in very successful ISDT/ISDE performances all eight times he has represented the USA, from 1992 through 2003. Wilcox put in 10 ISDT/ISDE rides between 1991 and 2002. In the first Over 40 Old-Timer Masters moto, Smith powered his Suzuki four-stroke to the holeshot and never looked back for six laps. Every corner. he used the same line as the last time; he was riding hard and fast, consistently working against the course and not worrying about the competition. Behind Smith, the war was on. Kawasaki jockey Wilcox followed for two laps, but then a persistent Richard Morgan, on a Yamaha. got by. The finish order for the first three was then set. In the second moto, Smith again showed everyone how to get off the start straight and onto the course. Shadowing Smith was Wilcox, and this time he kept second place to the checkers. with Morgan behind him. Six riders contested this class, and there was a second wave of Over 40 Old- YES!
