Laurel Mountain MX Grand Opening Laurel Mountain Motorsports Roberts Takes First Laurels at the Mountain By GARY CRIDER MADISONVIUE, TN, DEC. 12 The I Laurel Mountain Motorsports facility. which has been open for about a year as a top-notch practice track, held its first organized motocross race. Designed and built by former NationaJ MX Champion Mark Barnett. the track is laid out on the side of a mountain and features numerous elevation changes. Nearly all of its 1.3-mile length is visible from the grandstands. During the previous night, rain soaked the course but, thanks to the track's excellent drainage. there was no deep mud. Finding traction was a problem (or some of the less- experienced mud riders, however. The day's event was sponsored by Honda of Knoxville, Suzuki of Dalton, Jiffy Lube and K&S Specialties. Riders from four states were on hand. Mark Steventon was the race announcer. After a two-month layoff due to injury, Oakley/Fox-backed Gregory RobertS marked his return to racing by taking the win in the close-fought 125cc B contest, ahead of Tyler Horne and Cameron Stone. Suzuki pilot Roberts also won the Unlimited Amateur contest, after sharing moto wins with Marcus Thompson. Home returned to win both motos in the 12Scc Schoolboy division. Alix Freeman, who has recently graduated from the Mini ranks, earned the runner-up honors. Stone came back from spills in both motos to claim the final podium spot. Brandon Barnes did not seem to be slowed one bit by the muddy conditions as he ran away with both 125cc C moto wins aboard his SYD/Scott/Vortex-backed Yamaha. YPG's Freeman posted 2-5 finishes to earn the silver, ahead of Neil Crider. Yamaha riders Josh Walker and Mitch Jolly banged bars in both motos of the exciting 2S0cc C contest. Jolly held off Walker to win mota one. In mota two, Jolly showed the way until Walker moved up to begin a lead-swapping debate at mid mota. Walker was first at the flag and claimed the mota and the overall wins, ahead of Jolly. Travis Conner earned the bronze, ahead of local rider Andrew Miller. Jolly was involved in another close fight for the Over 30drvision win and, once again, he had to settle for the runner-up honors. John Ball won both matos, over Jolly. The 6Scc (7-9) class featured a good match between two high-spirited riders, Kenton Braswell of North Carolina and Tennessee's Donny Brown. At the end of the day, it was SAS series champion Braswell on top in a points tie over Brown. Fencepros RacinglMotoplanet-backed Jon Boruff won three of the four A-division motas and claimed the gold in both classes, The runners-up, Donnie Adams and Ryan Stanesu, kept the pressure on Boruff all day.
