Pit Bike Night Forster Livestock Povilion A Lovely Way to Win By JUSTIN WHARTON SALEM, OR, NOV. 20 S alem Arenacross ran its first pit-bike race of the year, and it was a great success. Riders ranging in age from kids 6 years old to guys in their 40s competed on machines ranging from bone-stock XR50s to full-blown modded TTRI2Ss. The smallest class, the SOcc (12 and Under) class, was won by its only rider, Taylor Isaak (I-I). The next size up, the 50cc Stock (13 and Over) class saw Nate Hoddler take a huge win. Devan Murray (3-2) took second, and after being taken out in a corner in the second moto, Tim Wilson (2-3) had to settle lor third. The 51-1 15cc (14 and Under) class saw Kody Clark (I-I) take the overall win. William See was unbelievably fast, but he suffered mechanical problems in the first moto and thus was only able to salvage second with a 4-1 score. Tony "Toad" Dimeo (2-3) took third, Tim Capps (3-4) took fourth, and Colton Gilfeather (6-5) took fifth. The 51-1 15cc (15 and Over) class was a must-see, as there was constant action. In the first moto, James Lovely took the holeshot. followed by Heath Hamblin, Grant Hays and Klete Kinzer. Lovely gapped everyone right away, but within a couple of laps Justin Wharton, after a horrible start, had worked his way through the pack and moved into second. Time was in Lovely's favor, though, and he took the win. Wharton took second. followed by Hamblin, Hays and Kinzer. In the second moto, Lovely once again absconded with the holes hot. Wharton got a better start. but he had a run-in with Kinzer, which left Wharton on the ground. Lovely took a healthy win, followed by Kinzer in second and Hamblin in third. Wharton took fourth, and Hays was lifth. Lovely (I-I) took the overall win, Hamblin (3-3) took second, and Wharton (2-4) was third. Kinzer (5-2) took lourth, and Hays (4-5) was fifth. The I 16-200cc (a.k.a. TTR 125) class was won by Kenny Olson (1-3). Dave Sibley used consistent 2-2 finishes to take second, while Matt Williams (1-4) took third. Glen Koffler (4-3) took fourth, and Neal Meusling (5-5) finished filth. The Open division was viewed as the premier contest, with any size of pit bike allowed. The 14 and Under class was won by See (I-I), while Clark (2-2) took second and Capps (4-3) took third. Houston Keane (3-4) finished fourth, and Nolan Beyer (5-7) took fifth. The 15 and Over class was dominated by TTRs, with six of them taking the top seven spots. Sibley beat them all on his own sweet DR, winning both motos for the overall win. Olsen (3-2) took second, and the Xtreme-mounted Wharton was the top-placing minibike finisher, taking third overall with a 4-3 score. John Meusling (5-4) took fourth, and Koffler (6-5) took fifth. District 14 Indoor MX Series Round ,: Pro Source Suzuki Ughetti No Meatball at D 14 Indoor MX Opener By BART NEWMAN TECUMSEH, MI, NOV. 20 ven Michigan's winter months won't keep riders from competing, as the AMA District 14 Winter Indoor MX Series kicked off at the series at the Pro Source Suzuki track. Cole Ughetti made the good use of great starts to lead the SOcc Auto Senior class home and take the victory, nailing down the night's overall with a pair of mota wins. Meanwhile, Jeff Thompson didn't win a race all night yet still took the top prize in the 125cc B class by scoring fewer points than anyone else while placing second in both motos. In the first SOcc Auto Senior moto, Ughetti timed the gate drop to the millisecond and leaped ofl the line, jerking the pack into the sweeping first turn, followed by Collin E 38 Whitefield, Nathan Fields, Darien Vaughn and Jeremy Murphy. Ughetti had the track dialed in and was turning some mighty fast laps, and before long he had a comly lead on that pack, which was engaged in a bitter battle over second. Whitefield lost the front end in a tight left-hander, allowing Fields and Vaughn by. Ughetti was gone. flying away with the win. Vaughn used a quicker line through the whoops to overtake Fields on the last lap to seal up the top three. In moto two, Ughetti didn't get the same jump he had in moto one, but he had his KTM's throttle pinned, and he slipped into turn one with the pack looking at his rear fender. With the lead in hand, Ughetti went to town, proving to the large crowd on hand that his first-mow win was no fluke. Whitefield was doing his best to keep Ughetti in sight, but it was in vain, JANUARY 19, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS because Ughetti was not to be denied. Ughetti took the win, making the overall his with a nearly flawless ride. Whitefield didn't make any miscues this time around, despite getting pressure all moto long from Fields. Whitefield's second-moto runner-up placing also locked up second overall. Fields finished third in both goarounds to take the last spot on the podium. Trip Harrington led the 125cc B guys through turn one in the first moto and put his head down to lead the affair from start to finish. He was the fastest man through the rhythm section. Thompson was quick off the line, follOWing Harrington, and while he kept the leader honest, he just couldn't make the pass into the lead. Rounding out the top three was Thomas Cole. In moto two, it was Steve Carpenter's Suzuki out front after he timed the gate perfectly. Thompson was in second when the white flag came out, while moto-one winner Harrington was suffering the effects of a troubled start in third. That order remained the same to the end, giving Thompson the overall with a score of four. RESULTS 50 SHAFT: 1. Mitchell Harrison (Cob). SO JR: I. Kaleb Bowen (KTM); 2. Mitchell Harrison (Cob); 3. District 36 Motion Pro Youth Cross Country Championship Series Round '0: Wilseyville Hore Scrombles at Shadd Ronch Gragg's Comeback Attackl By LISA K. GRAGG WILSEYVILLE, CA, NOV. 20 arrison Gragg let it be known he was back, starting with the holeshot off the 80-1 05cc A-class start in the Youth series' main event. After breaking two bones in his left arm in midSeptember, he showed up ready to get back on the throttle. The Kawasaki jockey had a good lead entering the first corner, followed by KTM rider Jonathan Davis, who was closely pursued by Yamaha-mounted Jonathan Godman. Leading for the first mile on the 4-mile track, Gragg led the pack down into a ravine, staying to the left, followed by Davis and Joey Pascarella; all three front-runners ride for Mach I Motorsports of Vallejo, California. Godman found a better line on the right and emerged from the ravine as the leader. For the next mile and a half, Godman rode hard, pressured by Gragg and Davis to keep the top spot in this mostly single-track course. Dropping out of the woods into some singletrack near the spectators, Godman was riding with Gragg's knobby under his back fender (no pressure here!). About 30 feet back was Davis, some 35 seconds or so ahead of the rest of the pack. They were heading toward the most technical part of the most technical race of the year for these District 36 riders - down a creek, over a narrow bridge, up and down ravines, dashing between trees on a tightly forested course. When they emerged from the woods, Gragg had retaken the lead, and he and Davis continued to pull away. At the end 01 the eighth lap, just before the one· hour cutoff. Gragg and Davis had more than a five-minute lead on the rest of the riders. These two were the only ones to log nine laps. The finishing order was Gragg, Davis and Godman. G Off the start of the top girls' line, Kasie Creson took the lead, followed by Brooke Hodges and Kristen Cosby. After having problems on the start line, points leader Kasy Martinez was back in front by the end of the first lap. Creson and Hodges battled for second. When Martinez went down, Creson and Hodges both went by, and each held the lead for a time, swapping it back and forth. Martinez then retook the lead, followed by Creson and then Hodges. When Hodges went down hard on a rock. her race was over. Cosby moved into the third, making the final order Martinez, Creson and Cosby. This was the 54th annual Wilseyville Hare Scrambles hosted by the Shadd family on the privately owned Shadd Ranch. The riders look forward to this race all year long; it's a real favorite. Wilseyville is known for its unpredictable race weather: One year, campers said goodnight to clear skies and woke up in two feet of snow. They don't dish up conditions much better than this year's: Plenty of rain during the week made course conditions tacky and wet, but race day dawned a beautiful and sunny but cold autumn day.
