Rounds 9/9/12: West Texas Boondockers Enduro
Another Round for Rondo
By Bill KAMIN
MATADOR, TX, NOV. 20
D on Schmelzle made it look easy on his way
I"ro another commanding victory on day one
of the West Texas Boondockers 31 st enduro.
"The traction was like riding on a freshly
baked brownie," opined the man whose riding
skills are. according to one of his AA
competitors. "from another planet."
"It was scary how fast you could go,"
Schmelzle elaborated. "It was hard to put time
on anyone because the conditions were so
good. It was a super-fun event."
Schmelzle's 17.1077 finish solidified his
position as the RMEC's top AA rider for
another season. TSCEC's Michael Wilson was
three minutes back for second overall.
Colorado M rider Jeff Hernandez rounded out
the top three. another minute back.
No timekeeping was involved in this
qualifier-style event co-sanctioned by the
RMEC and TSCEC. Short-course riders were
clocked through three sections, while A and B
riders added a fourth.
The first special test would make or break
the day for most. Shortly into this test was a
narrow ravine with a mud bottom. The week's
rains had made it a small stream, but after a few
rows, it became a bike-swallowing chasm. Many
riders found a way around, but not before losing
loads of time. While winning scores were in the
teens, many ran well into the 100s.
RMEC rider Josh Dailey told of being
stopped behind a dozen or so bikes when he
heard someone rapidly approaching: "Steve
Hatch came up behind me, stopped for a few
seconds, then blasted up along the wall of the
ravine and around the mess. He was gone!"
STORM series AA rider Jeff O'Leary
managed a very fast 22.1282 [0 take overall A
in this, his "first enduro in years."
"The TSCEC series is an awesome series,"
O'Leary added.
Regular leaders Jordan Chambliss and Nick
Brozevich overalled the Band C divisions,
while Randal Fowler took the age-group
overall. RMEC M riders Jeff Hernandez, Mark
Stevens and Mart Geary managed to bump
Texas M rider Cole IGrkpatrick back to sixth notably different from his string of firsts this
season. Super Senior rider Floyd Stretch took
first in class, second overall B, and clinched his
series title. A photo finish saw Mark
McDonough squeak by Donny Murray by five
seconds in the 250cc A contest.
Schmelzle expressed sincere thanks to
Colorado Powers ports for their help in
another successful season.
"The yz was perfect again," he continued. "I
couldn't have done it without the help from
Durelle Racing, Silkolene, Shift and Emig Racing."
'J\nother excellent year-end event for the
two circuits," summed up TSCEC A rider
David Klein. "WTBD member Neil Tucker,
head wrench at Cycle Shack of Lubbock, found
time to perform as master of ceremonies and
to provide exceptional support for all the KTM
and Husaberg riders."
Former TSCEC president and WTBD
member George McMahan expressed his
appreciation to the club and riders for pulling
off a great race under very difficult conditions:

from the previous day's loss. and he ran away
with top honors in the 125cc class and first
