CALVMX Se ries Round 7 : Planet Xtreme Park New Track, Same Old Funl By STEVE CARO PAUMA VALLEY, CA, OCT. 23 T he closing of Carlsbad Raceway put a major cri mp in the California Vintage Motocro ss 2004 series. With no tracks willing to w ork w ith the Vintage racing club by modifying th eir co urses to suit th e older mach ines , it appeared the series had come to a premature end. Fo r t u nat el y. Planet X t reme manager Bob Taylo r a n d CALVMX board mem ber Dave Sco urfie ld were able to w ork out an agreemen t allowing the club access to a section of the Planet Xtreme facility where a t rack con structe d w it h the dona ted labo r of Brad, Chris and Jay Roysdon wo uld be built. The flnlshed track weaved t hrou gh a valley of oa k tr ee s. giving t he course t he loo k of a traditional European o ut door layout . Recent rains had virtually eliminate d any worrie s abou t heavy dust conditions. In Vintage Spo rt sman SOOcc Novic e action, t he Yama ha MX360 of Glenn Barlkne cht on ce again dom inated the field. In mo ta one, Barfknecht grabbed an early lead com ing out of the t ight S-shaped flrst turn . Close beh ind was Suzu ki-mou nted Fran k Vrettas an d C Z-mou nt ed Je ff Carve r. By lap three, Barlknec ht had shaken off his pursuers and bu ilt a massive 20second le ad . Be hind him, Vre ttas clung to se co nd, w hile Bultaco -mounted Je ff O ' Brian slipped into third place . At th e checkers, it was Barfkne cht unopposed for first , with Vret tas and O'Brian taking the runner-up and third positions. Moto two was a mirror image of the first: Barfknecht roosted out of the first tum ahead the pack and was never challenged again. Be hind him, Carver and O ' Brian vied for sec o nd place . Midway thro ugh lap two, O 'Bri an and Vr ettas mo ve d into se cond and th ird . With Barfknecht taking an undisputed first overall , the final battle was between O 'Brian and Vrettas for se cond overall. O 'Brian manag ed to kee p his Spanish moun t ahead of Vrettas as the two navigated the challenging course to capture sec ond overall , with Vrettas taking third . Proving his domination was no fluke, Barfknech t con tinued his reign of terror in the Over 50 Vintage class. O nce again, Barlk necht nailed the holesho t and took the lead as the pack th undered on to t he course. Beh ind him was CZ rider Steve Atwood, Bulta co joc key Jo hn Pischke and Kawasaki rider Randy Nickel. Barfknec ht pulled a huge lea d while climbing the steep up hi ll sec t io n of the c ourse . Be hind him, Atwood was co mfortabty in second, while Nickel too k ove r the third spo t on lap four, At the finish, it was Barlknecht in first , followed by Atwood and N icke l. As t he rubber band sprung for mo to two , CZ- mo unt ed Atw ood shook things up by grab bing the lead go ing over the first table top jump , w ith Barlknecht close behind . At the end of lap o ne, Bar fknecht wo rked his way around Atwood as t he pair roared th rough the tree-lined back section of the course. Close behind were Pischke and Nickel. By lap four, not even a sputtering motor was going to deter Barfknecht from taking anothe r ove rall victo ry.
