AMP Outlaw Winter Natianals Inda a r Dirt Track Series Round I: Lightning C Arena Eslicks Fast as Lightningl By DAN MAHONY MCALESTER, OK, OCT. 16 he Eslick brothe rs mad e th e sho rt trip do w n from Brok en Arro w, O klahoma, to the Lightning C Arena in McAleste r a profitable one by taking some wins. Big brother A.j. won th e Mad Dog Mini Pro class, w hile his littl e bro t he r Danny topped t he hotly con t ested Open Pro division . Following a brace of heat race s wo n by Aj . and Joe Lacer, a full field of 12 riders lined up fo r t he In -lap fina l in t he Ope n Pro clas s. Clayto n Hull jumped off of his pole position into the le ad , ove r the Eslick rus h, th e McAnally bro thers (Vietor and Lee), and Lacer' s Hond a. Hu ll ke pt his ROlaX on t he po int un til t he halfway nags, w he n Lace r made his move to take the lead. Clear sailing was not in the cards fo r the tall Kansan , ho weve r, as Danny Eslick (riding, by the way, his bro ther's facto ry Suzuki) o utraced veteran Lace r to gra b t he top spot t w o la p s la te r. As D a nn y drove for th e checkered flag, A.J. and his Adams Racing Rotax came very close at the line, but he still came up short for t he big bucks. Lace r finished t hird, with Aaron Lindfors fourt h. Hull faded to fifth place at the finish, The Mad Dog Minicontest was all A J.'s. joel Lacer held his Yamaha stea dy in second place, over Clayto n Hull, Lindfo rs, Travis Hull and Lonnie Hull. Roy Dal Hinkle made a rare appearance pay off with a win in the Vintage Pro 600cc division. Kevin Ellingswo rt h pressed Hinkle every lap on T the high side but was unable to co mplet e the pass. Mike Newton finished third. Danny Ha m m o nd wo n the Vintage Pr o Masters class, w hile Mark Gatlin took home the Vintage Amate ur 600cc gold. Travis Hull took the checkers in the O pe n Amateur go, ove r Daniel La Rocca. Bot h ride rs w e re Honda-mount ed . No ot Irvin proved that he is still mighty tough to beat on his home town track. Th e local Pro rider, aboard th e Augusta HID -sponsor ed Hon da, put on a clinic on the how-to's of passing o n the inside as he knifed his way t hr o ugh traffic to take wins in bo th the Pr o -Am a nd t he O pen Pr o ma in events. Chase Sconyers, aboard the Honda of Sta tesb o ro! Sta rPlates by Fuzzy Hon da, finished w ith hard-earned th ird- and seco nd-place finishes in those races , re spectively. Sconyers sa id he fe lt that he had done everything he cou ld and that Irvin really had his motorcycle dialed in o n t his night. The MX class featu red some of the closest racing of the night , wit h all five ride rs bat tling for the lead throughout the main event . As the tigh tly bunched grou p pre pared to ex it turn fou r on the last lap, jay Sinno tt , rid ing the Ho nd a Kawasak i Yamaha of O ra ngeb urg Kawasaki, wen t dow n. Having nowhere else to go, George Wel ls Sr. cras hed hard into Sinnott 's downed machine. When the dust settled, Brian Alliso n e merged as t he victor, with Marty Smoak second and Sinnott third. The rider co unt was good, and th e Open classes provided so me of the be st action of t he year. Aaro n Ladd wen t to the front of th e O pen Pro -Am class, w hile Kevin Snyder an d jaso n Good win we re looking for an opening. Ladd was r unn ing a perfe ct race , w hile Go odw in wen t highe r and higher o n th e trac k. Good win's wild fine finally pulled him through, as he took the lead and ca rrie d it to t he wi n, ove r Ladd and Snyde r. jer em y Anderso n slid into fo urt h, and Koji Furuhashi ro unded o ut the top five. Ladd and Goodw in hoo ked up again in the O pe n Pro final, w ith Ladd at th e front again. Ladd kept his cool and took the close win ove r Goodwin, while Vet winner Bill Gruwe ll held off Snyder for thi rd. De a n Faulkner, Mad Do g 74 wi nner Stevie Nace, Furuhash i and Anderson roun de d out the field. jacob Morris was perfec t on the 50cc bikes. He had a close bat tle w ith Luke Baird in the Shaft class to sco re bot h moto wins . Destiny Ham was a so lid t h ird . In t he Chain class , Morr is held back Tf winner Nick McFadde n to take another close win, with Baird in th ird . Hayde n Gillim swe pt t he 200 cc Amate ur an d 8Scc classes. Gillim absco nded w it h the holes hot in bot h features and slipped away to the wins. jake Lewis was second each time out , over Open Amat eur winner Nathaniel Vowe ll. Nikki Spore and Ethan Gilli m traded spo ts for fourth and fift h, The 200cc Pro-Am short track found Lewis, Hayden, Spore and james Finnell hilling the dirt in turn one , b ringi ng out the red flag.
