the best of the year : wide open and fast. much different from
the typical New Englandhare scrambles.
At I:40 p.m., the green nag waved for the final race of the
year. Newcom er Eric Anderson grabbed the holeshot , John Day
Sr., Greg Hamel and D.J. Lis we re right on his heels as the pack
raced through the first few turn s of the grasstrack before hitting
the wood s and their first hillcli mb. The Pros stormed up the hill
two abreast and w ide open. All of the usual leaders we re up
from except Sant heson; he literally flew by in last place as he
jumped off a rott ing stump going uphill.
Co ming aro und on lap tw o we re RER Moto rcity rider s Matt
Jalbert and Lis, battling for the lead. Wes Clarke cruised by in
third, with Day fourth and KTM's Anthony Geraci in fifth. With
the track's being " faster" than normal, many riders dropped out
after several big crashes.
Lis too k over the lead, w ith a l4- second gap on Jalbert.
Cycle Connect ion-sponsored Santheson had moved all the way
up into th ird . Ge raci and Pro Circuit's Day we re fourth and
fifth, respectively.
The nex t t ime ar ou nd . th e lead trio had t ightened up
considerably to within 25 sec onds of one another and had built
a 3D-second cushion over enduro rider Geraci. Down anoth er
minute was Y
amaha's Day, running in fifth.
Meanwhile , A 25Dcc rider Alden Clark was setting som e
very im pr essive lap times while wo rking his way through
t he Pro class . He wa s ph ysically running in about si xth
place , but he w o uld most likely move up a couple of spots
on ad justed t ime .
Coming around with on e lap to go, Santheson had ta ken
t he lead and pulled 16 seconds on second-placed Us. Ge raci
had moved into third, w ith Day fourth and Yamaha pilot Jeff
Staples in fift h. C-Cyde's Jalbert opted to drop out of the
race afte r a big get-off that left him se eing stars ; luckily, he
was okay, and he pro mised to be back next year to defend
his t itle.
After mo re t han two hours of racing, Spectr o -spons ored
Santheson had broken [albe rt 's five-race winning streak and
claimed his se cond victory of the year. Lis finished down 16
seconds in second, with Geraci third , A 250cc ace Clark in
fourth, and Day rounding out the top five,
