Joiner Takes the Highway
By PAM CARR
MAYFLOWER, AR, SEPT. 12
th no rain at all in September, round eight
of the Arkansas Hare Scrambles Cham pionship Series promised to be a dust bowl. Nevertheless , the promoter had laid ou t a wonderful
8-mile tl"ack cons isting of everyt hing fro m tight
woods to grasstracks . A few hills w ith ro cks
gave some riders fits, bu t nothing could stop
Tonyjoiner kom taking the eve nt overall.
More than a doze n M riders headed into
the d usty first tu rn to see who wou ld have a
clear pat h ahead . Yama ha/ Marshall's
Racing/Moose ride r joiner took the ho leshot
an d le d the way fro m t here . Beh ind him ,
second-placed Hayden Moore had to battle the
dust. Kawasak i Sports Ce nt er's Brian Sander
was third into the woods.
At the end of the first lap, jo iner had pu lled
a 30-se co nd lead on Honda jockey Moore.
Sanders was fighting his way thro ugh the d ust
to stay as close as possible , but he was o ne
minute down behind joiner.
"I tried to go as fast as I cou ld, but the dust
was just too bad to see anything," Sanders said.
W iseco/Devo l Engineering/ EVS/FMFfTwin
Air -sponsored Chad Echols came fr o m a
midpack start up to fourth.
"When the pack started to sprea d out, th e
dust wasn 't as bad , and I was ab le to make a
couple of moves rorward ," Echols said.

After the second lap , jo ine r had pulled a
minute lead over Moore. With lappers stMting
to become a facto r, joiner now had to tackle
some dust of his own.
"I didn't have any dust at all until I got into
the lappers," joiner noted , "but even then , I
found a way around pretty fast."
Sande rs had turned in the seco nd-fastest lap
of lap two and was starting to come on strong.
The batt le for fourt h place was st ill tight , but
Echols was still holding o n to the positio n.
O n lap three , jo ine r had on ly a 50 -second
le ad o n Moo re . San de rs was in third and
catching up q uickly. Echo ls had finally gotten a
litt le breathing roo m, settling into fourth all by
himself. Bieschke and Snoo k continued to battle
for fifth; the two were passing eac h other back
and forth with o nly a second between them.
Jo ine r put some mo re distance between
himself and Moore. The real show was Sanders,
as he was making his way through the lappers,
ga ining more t ime as the lap went on . The
Fly/Koci nsk i Ra c ing/ Sco ll/ Michelin/Decal

lap on lap fo ur. Echols conti nued to distance
himself from Bie sc hke and Snook. With the
white flag out , the riders knew they better turn
it up if they wanted to keep the ir poSitions.
At the end, it was Joiner taking the overall
win by a little over a minute . Moore finished an
impressNe second. Sanders came from behind
to finish just right behind Moore for th ird .
