Sco" USA Motocross Championship Series Round 42: Mila n Cycle City Winding Down and Gearing Up at Psycho City By ARTHUR MABRY MILAN, MI, SEPT. 17 ourtee n-year-old Mark Burns - we ll-know n aro und the track as "M.J." - busted onto the scene , signing up in th e 125cc Expert class at Mil n Cycle City, which is winding down the 2004 a season and gearing up for 2005, which will be the track's 37th season. Milan (also known as "Psycho City") is stro nger than ever, serving second- and now third-generation motorcycle racers . In th e 12Scc Expe rt class, M.J. made his deb ut on the Honda East of Tole do RM2S0cc four-stroke. Burns knows he has a long, uphill battle ahead but looks forwa rd to the challenge of racing with the faste r guys. M.J. has always bee n a wi nne r, giving max imum effort a nd refusing to give up no matter wha t the situation. At the start of the first I25cc Expert mote, M.J. got off the gate and to the first turn right in the front of the pack, but he soon gave way to Shane Hor ne and josh ua Bracken . Steven Yarosz shot his Yamaha right in between Horne and Bracken, and the trio spent the e ntire moto in a fierce bar-to -bar battle for the lead. None of the t hree made a m istake, nor did t he y appear to show any signs of slowing down during th e enti re mo to . Another of t he new Experts, Dan ie l Blac k. made his pre sence known. placing fourt h overall. Black, a lso a youngster. rides w ith a confident sty le that certa in ly pleased t he e nth usiasti c crowd. Spectators enjoy an unobstructed view of the entire track, and the ir chee ring fuels the flames o f exci teme nt. T homas Kora lesk l c ha nged po sition s more th an anyone e lse and finally ende d up fifth. Burns was last to finish in both mote s. but he fully expe ct ed to st art at th e bottom and work his way up. Black and Burns are bot h examples of the new breed of racers F who th rive on the challenge of racing in a highe r class. This is in stark contrast to the sandbagging me ntality, which hopefully has run its course . T he Motocr o ss Rac ing Associ at ion uses a pro gres sive class st r uctu re th at enco urages racers to go faste r. Racers usually stan in the Beginne r classes and then pr ogre ss th ro ugh Novice, Inte rmediate and the n Expert. Burns did to p the 2S0cc Four-Stroke Junior ( 12- 15) cla ss , over Walt e r Ch ole tt e Jr. an d Steve Brighton . The 2S0cc Inte rmed iate class was also an act ion- packed eve nt . Jarret t Toro k an d john Wolkow put on a show that had the crowd in an uproar. The two closely matched racers gave each ot her something to deal w ith at every turn and jump. Whe n racing in seco nd, Torok wo uld set up Wolkow and make the pass. O nce ahead, Torok found it impossible to keep the lead for very long, as Wo lkow wo uld prove th at what comes ar ou nd , goes aro und . Torok won the first mo to, tho ugh just by a cou p le o f bikele ngt hs. The second moto was a re peat until Wolkow ran out of gas on the third lap and scored a DN F. RESUL TS 50 (4 -6) BEG STK : I. AHRMA Nationa l Hare Scra mbles AMS National Cross Country Series Rou nd 12: Two Rivers Raceway Sass Back in Front at Colorful Colorado Cross Country Contest By ROGER BROPHY MIWKEN, CO, SEPT. 17 Two Ri e rs Raceway in Mill iken, Colorado, v I was the site for the AHRMA Hare Scrambles, and mor e than 50 showed up on Friday to kic k of f rou nd 12 of the AMS-s po nsor e d National Cross Co untry Ser ies. Aft er t he riders ' me et ing , riders we re allowed one observation lap, and classes were then staged for th e dea d-e ngine start . The first wave was all Experts. regardle ss of class; then, a mi nut e la te r, t he Inte r media t e s sta rt ed , followed in turn by th e Novices and Ladies. At the start, local Colorado cham pion Bruce Sass bro ke into th e lead and tooled his postvintage Yamaha aro und the hot 3.7-m ile co urse, which consisted of old farm road, singletrack, a small bridge and some of the motocross course. Sass led the one-hour eve nt fro m wire to wire, easily winning the Post -Vintage O pe n Expert class and the overa ll. Second place went to first-year Expe rt Scott Brophy, who chased his way up from last place a fte r his Maico would n't fir e a t the start . Des pite the effort , Brop hy co uld only dose to within one minute of Sass at the finish. Ma r k Skar ph o l t urn e d in a great ride , running up front. flying high and charging hard for all six laps, besting fellow CZ rider Robert Borg in the Sports man Op e n Expert class. Another nota ble perf or man ce wa s tha t of Dan Johns, who put the old ''A Jay" Storme r in the midst of all t he long-t rave l po st -vint age bikes, easily winning the Classic Expert division. over Harry Wynns and Bob Garner. Not surprisingly, the California Post-Vintage Novice twins, Tim and Ted Lindewall, finished one-two (they do stick together), while Wes Willis and Pat Holmes top ped the Over 50 Post-Vintage Expert and Intermediate classes, respectively. The nature o f the start and the re lative ly short laps made for ple nty of passing as th e leader s carved their way though the pack. Most rider s co uldn't te ll where t hey we re running until the finishes were posted . As rider after rider came into the finish with sage and pucker bush jammed in the foot levers, it appeared 13 riders finished on the lead lap, which was pretty good, since the Experts were nearly half a lap out when the final wave was started. Most agreed that Corky Root and the staff laid out a great course, with perhaps the excep tion of some dow ned co urse markers. wh ich allowed some questionable short cuts for a few riders. but it was a grea t kick-off for the four-event , threeday weekend of racingat Millike n.
