District 36 European Scrambles Honey Lake Motocross Park MILFORD, CA, SEPT. 12 H o ney Lake Mo toc ross Park played host to its first Dist rict 36 Euro pean Hare Scrambles o n Septe mber 12. A lot of hype surrou nded the event , wi t h first-time rs d ue to ride t he track. Renowned for bei ng one of the most physically cha llenging tracks around , the addi tion of some off-road sections proved to be the pe rfect reci pe for a large turnout. T he course was laid out over the regular motocross track a nd branche d out into the surrounding areas , incorporating tr ee dodging, "rock climbing" and wa ter wading into the race. The entire course was fo ur miles long, and the fastest lap time of the weekend was clocked at six minutes and 53 seconds , co urtesy of KTM rider No lan Irwin. The Grand A Taste of European Honey By CASHEl HACKLAND _ lined with rocks before taking a quick ride on a fairly easy off-roa d path. Once o ut of the wood s (lit e rally) , they had the pleasure o f kee ping themselves honest with the infamous MX39S. Th e course was a crowd-p leaser and riderfriendty; after the race , the co mpe titors all agreed that they cou ldn't wa it for next year's event, though they wou ld definitely be hitting the gym before heading back! Irwin dominated the race in true champion fashion and easily took the win. Justin Soule, already an established off-road and mo toc ross rider, was also the holeshot art ist in the 250cc A Sportsman class. Soule had some trouble near the midd le of the race w hen he lost his clutch leve r, fo rcing him to finish the race w ithout brakes. This did not det e r Soule from putting o n an awesome display of will and determi na tion to t a ke t he w in . So ule ha d co mpeti ti o n fr om Bria n Butl e r, w ho ca me with in arm 's reach of the leader on more than o ne occasi on ; however, that was not enough to take the lead , and So ule pulle d ahead in the clos ing min utes o f t he race to finish wi th a co m fo rta ble le ad . Butler an d John We ar followed the Kawasaki rider home. This first-time event was a huge success and had the most first -time rs. with the exception of Honey Lake's first-ever even t back in 200 I. Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz was first to tum one, but he slowed , along with Shawn McConnell and Charlie Venegas, after seeing that the inside pole had inadvertently been pushed into th e racing line. Manchester, along wit h everyone else in the are na, didn't see what had happened , and he kept the th rottle on and blazed into the lead. By the time the others realized that the referee was allowing the race to co ntinue , Mancheste r was go ne . T he fo r me r Natio na l C ha m pio n cruised to his second Industry Hills main-eve nt win . Ven egas was seco nd, McConnell finishe d third, and Schwartz was fourth. The first of t hree rou nds of heats began wit h Northern Californ ia's Bryan Yarrow beat ing McC o nn e ll. Denn y Sc ope llit e ea r ned an impr e ssive wi n over Dukie Er mo lenko in the nex t race. Round one e nded with Manche ster tra pping fro m the outside gate and holding off Venegas fo r the victo ry. In the seco nd round of heats, Ve negas wo n his first race of the night, with Scopellite finishing 40th Anniversary in second. McCo nnell scored his initial Victory, ahead of Schw artz . Mancheste r closed out the second ro und w ith his second straight win. Venegas took his second straight victory to open the final round . Schwartz sco red a win over Nate Perkins in the next race. T he heats co ncluded wit h McC o nn ell defea ting Manchester fo r his second w in of the evening . Manchester and Venegas finishe d one-two in the first semi an d transferred to the main eve nt .
