PHOTOS BY BART NEWMAN Grewe Grand at Portland Charity MX By BART NEWMAN PORTlAND, MI, SEPT. 12 " " e Portland Trail Riders have held a Charity I MX weekend for the last five years, with all th e proceeds going to the Clayton Memorial Foundation . To date , the Penland has raised nearly $50,000 for this great cause. Hats off to all the Portland members; this year, a check was written to the Clayton Memorial Foundation for $5000 . Having already won the Over 30 and Over 25 classes during the morning's program, john Grewe nailed the start of the first 2SOccA mote and followed the first rule of racing: Never look back . Scotty Thompson was running second, with Mall t-laxlmoff Trevor Gundlach and Jerry Lorenz co m pleting t he t op five on lap o ne. Thompson was allover Grewe during the first four laps, never close enough to show him a wheel but always within striking distance . Their battle put them a good IS seconds ahead of the rest of the field, which was led by Maximoff and Lorenz, who had found a way past Gundlach . Grewe won going away, with Thompson second and Maximoff third . In mota two, "old man " Grewe was out front when the gang floated around tum one, with Brad Smith, Maximorr and Thompson following . Maximoff set up Smith to grab second , and Thompson and Gundlach were pushing hard to make a play for a top-three Ilnlsh. That running order would stand for all 20 minutes plus two laps. Grewe took the win, and was probably glad that his w ife had talked him into racing the 2S0cc A class. Thompson (2-3) took second. and Smith (8-3) grabbed the last spot on the box after a tough first mota. In the 12Scc A class , T.J. Auten , Co rey Slavik and Thompson rounded turn one ahead of the pack. Auten found a great line near the golf course and quickly put five seconds on the pair. With a clear track a head , the MCR Suspension/Full Throttle MotorsportslThor/ Sunstar-backed Auten carried his lead to the checkered flag. Thompson took a soil sample Gamb le (Kaw) ; 2.
