BViEbiT S PHOTOS BY ROB O BRIEN Parts Canada S uperbike Championship Round s: Shannonville Motorsport Park Going in Style BY JOHN HOPKINS SHANNONVILLE, ON, CANADA, SEPT. 5 P asca l Picotte co mp leted his 2004 se aso n in styl e and earn ed a place in the Canadian Superbike record books at the final round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Shannonville Motorsport Park on September 5. The rider of the Team Yamaha/Picone Performance Yamaha YZF-R I rode to a convincing victory from pole pos ition , leading all 14 laps around the 2.S-mile Shannonville "long" track . The tri umph was Picotte 's fifth of the season , tying him with Steve Crevier and jordan Szoke for the most National Superbike wins in a single year. Picotte, who had a lready locked u p hi s second straight Parts Canada Superbike title two weeks earlier, also qualified on pole posit ion, obliterating his own track record in the process. "W hat a way to finish the season ," the Quebec ace said. "It was the perfea weekend. We cou ldn't have finished the season any better." Crevier finished second on the DXS Diablo Racing Team Suzuk i GSX-RIOOO. The six-time Canadian champion passed Frank Tro mb ino o n the second lap but was unable to ma ke any he ad way in c at c hing Picotte . Alth ough th e official ma rgin of vic t o r y was only . 78 9 seconds, Picotte led by just over five seconds before easing his pace in the closing laps. "I tr ied re ally hard to make up grou nd, but it seemed the harder I tried, the mo re mistake s I made," said C re vie r, who was riding with a broken ankle suffered in a supermoto crash the Wednesday before the Shannonv ille event. Afte r hound ing Crevier for the first half of the race , Trombino settled for third on th e Brooklin Cycle Yam aha YZF-R I. and as a result he finished just two points beh ind Crevier, in sixth place in the final standings. The best battle of the race was between Szoke and C lint McBain fo r fourth . The two traded t he spot a co uple of times over the final few laps befo re Szoke prevai led o n the Ho nda C an ad a/F ast Com p an y Ho nd a C BRIOOORR. Szoke secured second in series points, beh ind Picott e and just ahead o f third-placed Kevin Lacombe , w ho was sixth at Shannonville. The race of the day was the Inte rnatio nal Mo t o rc ycl e Supe rshow Amateur 600cc Sportbike finale . Three riders came into the weekend with a realistic shot at the title. After no fewer than three red flags, Do minic Lavoie jumped from third to first in the standings with a second-place finish on his Kawasak i ZX~6RR. Darre n jame s was the points leader comi ng into the final round, but by finishing seventh on his Yamaha YZF-R6 he wound up three points back of Lavo ie , 203-2 00 . Rudy Rapo so , w ho entered the finale second in po ints be hind james , crashed out on the first lap of the final restart . Opening-round victor Thomas Macsanszky scored the race win on his Yamaha. Picotte added the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600cc Sportbike win to his Shan nonville haul. He also led every lap of that one from po le on his R6. It was Picone's fifth straight win in the clas s and his si xth in e ight races . He had clinched the series t itle a round earlier.
