By CLAY LIGHT ALBANY, OR, SEPT. 4 o uthe rn Oregon speedster Michael Horban ruled the roost at the ope ning round of the six-round Oregon State Motocross Championship Ser ies , held at Albany Motorsports S Park . Riding his bra nd-n ew Kawasaki KX250F, Horban was the dominant performer in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classe s, joining 5uzuki rider William See, Cobra-mounted Ben Chappell and yz pilot Mall Wilson as doubl e class winners on the day. Horban has been successful d ur ing t he Wester n and Wh ite Bro t he rs Fou r-Stroke Nationals this season , and the second-year Pro from Grants Pass , Oregon , has stead ily progressed to the top of the Pro ran ks . Althoug h he was the lone Pro r ider in attendance, he did withstand tests from several of the Northwest's top Inte rmediate riders, such as Wilson. Wilson has been the rider to beat all season long in the Inte r med iate and Four-Stroke classes , and he did give Horban challenges in the combined 250cc Pro/Four-Stroke contest. Horban ruled in moto one , but Wilson grabbed the lead at the start of moto two, and it was several laps before Horban got past Wilson . An error on Wilson's part allowed Horban to get by. after Horban had moved up from a poor start to chase down the rider fro m Eugene , and with two laps remaining . he took the lead when W ilson went wide and lost traction. Another racer with a brand-new mount, Junior rider Erik Meusling. stayed in contention for the overall Four -Stro ke-c1ass win, sticking with Horban and Wilson (or several laps. The lead duo , however, pulled away from the 15- year-old Meusling in the later stages , and Me usling finished second overall, aboard his Suzuki. 'ramaha-mounted Zach Taft w asn't far off the leaders' pace, e ither, and with his fourth-place finish he won the ad joined 250cc Intermediate class. Horb an and Wilson ran at the head of the com bined 125cc Pro/Intermediate/Junior field - with 23 riders, one of the day's largest classes but in the end, the outcome was much the same, in Horban's favor. Wilson led the way in the Intermediate class, finishingahead of Robert Wullbrandt and Kevin Petrushkin, while Cody Hockema pre vailed in the junior class. Travis Michael Horban was a double class winner at the opening round of the Oregan State Motocross Championship Se rie s, held at Albony Motorsports Park. Horban captured the overall 125« and 250« Pro-class wins. McClinton, who topped the first junior moro , couldn't repeat his earlier success and placed fourth in mote two, aiding in Hockema's overall wi n o n a 2-2 tall y. McC linton ( 1-4) , Travis Gierke (4-3), Devin Sanger (3-7) and Meusling. who posted a super b win in moto two, filled out the top ffve overall. The Suzuki-mounted See has bee n close to the head of the pack in the Supermini and 8Scc age-group classes th is season, but his overall wins have been few. On this day, the rider from Medford , Oregon, manhandled the competition in both of those classes . See 's I-I tally topped the Supe rmini class - finishing ahead of Colin Baker and Tyler McClinton - and then he came back to capture both motes in the 85cc (12- 13) class. This time Baker prevailed in the 85cc (9- 1I) portion, while Tyler McClinton won the eN adjo ined 85cc ( 14- 16) class. Royce Eaton took the second spot on a Ducati 750cc , while jack Houman put his Norton on the last rostrum positlon, As day two dawned. tropica l storm Gaston closed in o n Carolina Motorsports. With the deluge of rain, many of the races ran four laps instead o f the regu lar six. However, the C Superb ike Expert and Novice classes were run together for a six-lap race. Both groups started toget he r, w it h C hris Normand taking t he holeshot in turn o ne . By lap two, Brandon Parrish , who was racing in the Novice group, came through the Expert field to take the lead. Aaron Bell pushed to keep Parrish's Yamaha in sight but was unable to get through the top three Experts. As the checkered flag dropped , Parrish took the first position on the track to win both the race and the Novice class. Bell put his Suzuki in seco nd , while Todd Yaros too k third . In the Expert class, Normand took the win aboard his Kawasaki 636, while Bo Morgan and Chris Stevenson rounded out the podium. Parrish went on to show his wet-weather skills by winning the B Superstock Novice , B Superbike Novice, C Supers tock Novice and
