AMA East Coast Speedway Cha m p ion Sp eedway The Return of the King By JASON BONSIGNORE OWEGO, NY AUG. 29 , L iving speedwa y legend "King" Kelly Moran roared back into the winners ' circle for the first time in 12 years at Champion Speedway in Owego, New York. Moran , who had be e n reti red for I I years before making a comeback last season in New York, turned in a vintage performance, dropping only one point all night long. It was the type of dominant performance that is expected from one who is rated as the 38th- best speedway rider of all time by Speed- way Star Magazine . The all-Scratch program began with Moran setting the tone by easi ly defeating je remy Parso ns , w ho has been one o f t he hottest Easte rn riders fo r the last se ve ral we ek s . T hr e e -t ime East champion Tom Sep hto n , Canadian National champ ion Kyle Legault and Eastern speedway god George Lazor wer e all first-round winners . Interesti ngly, t he rou nd-two victo rs w e re the same four racers who held the black-andwhite nag in round one. Rou nd t hree saw Sephto n a nd Mo ran re main undefeated , and Parsons and Legau lt also picked up wins. The final ro un d of he ats had youngst er Casey Donholt scoring an impressive win over Legault. Lazor and Parsons score d thr ee more points each , and Moran lost his only po int of the night at the hands of Sephton . With Moran dr op ping one point, a runo ff was forc ed between Moran and Parsons to see who w ould join Sephton directly in the main without havingto ride in the semis. Moran made the start and handifywon the two-lap race. Semi number one had Parsons hold ing off C raig Estelle, Do nholt and Brian Hollenbeck. Semifinal number two ended up being a great drag race to the finish, with Lazor just edg ing out Alex "Hazzard" Heath, with Legault and jerry Harman finishing third and fourth . Legault won the last-chance qualifie r and ended up as the fifth man in the evening's final. As Moran , Parso ns , Sephton , Lazor and Legault w alke d o ut fo r the final , many wo nde red if this was finally going to be the night t hat Moran put it all together. Since comi ng bac k last ye ar, he had put in ma ny impressive rides and made a lot of finals, but the big win had still eluded him. It didn't take long fo r the for me r t wo -t ime Na t io na l Champion and three -time World number four to answer the fans' quest ion. The Team JBR/Justice Brothers /Ara i/Gene the Machine-sponsored Moran rocke ted into the lead from the gate -one starting position and loo ked like the world-famo us Kelly Moran of old for all four laps to take the Scrat ch main win , followed by app lause from the fans and words o f congratu lat ions fro m man y o f th e riders on hand!
