Ov e r The Hill Gang Summer Se rie s /·5 MX Penta Gone in Gormanl By CHRIS CUMBO GORMAN, CA, AUG. 29 n the first Over 4S Beginners rnoto, Rick Hatfield's KTM's rear tire slid sideways on the starting line and he lost position . It looked like Steve Landsberg would take the holeshot straight up the hill , bu t Ty O shiro r ounded turn one first . from the outside. Oshiro took it to the checkers to w in his ninth stra ight mo to of the Summer Ser ies . Richard Taylor go t stuck in the gate but charged all the way up to seco nd. Landsberg. running third. sta lled on the 180-degree tum after the step-up jump. Steve Rongstad then inherited th ird and put in a fine ride . In moto two, Taylor finally go t the hole shot. I O shiro ne eded on e m ore m o to win for a perfect se ries . but it was not to be : Taylor took the overall, with O sh iro and Stev e Ro ngstad sec o nd and third. "Wh en I finally got ar ound Landsberg, I was w atching Taylor arou nd a turn ," Oshiro said . "Taylo r slowly fe ll over. I fell, too. Everyone passed us. I was tired and did all I could just to finish behind Taylor." In the first O ver 45 Novice mote, all eyes were o n Tim Joseph, who swe pt this venue at the Gang's last engagem en t. Howeve r. it was guest rider Jim Emb e rl e who astounded everyone by nabbing the hoIeshot. David Blosser was hot on Ebe rle's fender, his YX2S0 throwing up roost. Jim Ho lman put the power down on the Honda 450 to get around Blo sse r. Murray Armstrong tu cked in tight around the first tum and led the res t of the pack. Arms trong's 4SOcc Ho nda shot him over the step-up dou ble to pass Holma n. Bob "Too Tall" Breach go t a horrible start on his Yamaha 125. Arms trong moved into the lead. Brea ch held fou rth on lap two. and on the last lap he passed Armstrong. In mota two , Arms trong to o k off like he' d bee n shot o ut of a cannon, b ut he couldn't make th e first tum . Reid Fran ke had a pictureperfe c t start , le ad ing h is cl ass after a disappointing first mo to. Fra nke , a strong and determined rider, now go t a chance to show off his tru e abilit ies , th o ugh Art Flores and Tim Josep h gave Fran ke som e co ncern. Arm stro ng charged back up into third . Joseph captured the overall wit h two po dium finishes on the day. In the Over 38 Beginners class, Sean Gin and Han k Kokosensic too k early and co mmanding leads, respectively finishing first an d se co nd overall . Jo hn Hammonds kept the two in sight but co uldn't catch the m in e ith er mo to . In the Over 38 Novice class , Michael Penta, sporting red hand guards, showed the re st o f his class the fast way around the 1 track. He ·5 was followed by a hard-charging Randy Green, who seemed comfortable w ith the tra ck layou t and jumps . Jim Wentz. returning from an injury. held third. The ongoing "Mark Davies and Syd Woods Sho w " saw Davies top the Summer Series battle between the two. though Woods showed some finesse ove r the doubles. Davies place d third overall. behind Penta and Green. Pe nta froze the crowd with an uncatchable lead in both motes. AMA District 6 Poin ts Race Hurricane Hills Sports Center SANDERSON CLIFFORD, PA, AUG. 29 othe r Nature cooperated on Sunday w ith a pretty warm and humid day for the Dist r ict 6 points race at Hurricane Hills Sports Center, w hich was a re lief for the riders who had attended t he previous night's supe rcro ss race. Due to t he humid ity. ride rs had to ta ke e xtra care to stay hydrated. Andrew Mikolaichik, a loca l ride r from West P ittston , Pe n nsyl va n ia , topped the 250cc Novice class wit h a perfect I-I tally. Miko laichik got the holes hot and early lead M in the first outing, w ith Michael Tyrell . Andy HolI, Joe Liparela and Robert Anderson trailing. When the lead riders hit the bac k of the trac k on lap two , Tyrell was o u t front , while Miko laich ik had droppe d bac k to second ; Liparela and Mike Link had advanced to third and fourth . w hile Ho ll dropped back to fifth. After 2 I laps, Mikolaichik closed th e gap on Tyrell to a couple o f bi ke lengths and made se ve ra l attempts to pass but couldn't get it done . While they were battling. Lipare la was alone in third. and Hall moved back up t o fourth after passing Link. Mikolaichik made the pass on Tyrell on the finish-line double to start n the third lap. Tyrell was relegated to ru nne r-up. Mikolaichik rode sma rt and pus hed Tyrell w ide in the next corner to make sure his pass stuck . After that. Miko laichik slow ly pulled away and took the firs t-mota w in w ith a fi ve- second adva ntage. Ty r e ll. Lipa re la , Ho ll an d Link rou nde d out the top five. Tyrell got his Ho nda out fro nt on the start o f the final moto, followed by Miko laichik, Link. Dan Buske a nd Pau l Att an a s ia. Tyr ell and Mikolaichik quickly pulled away from the rest o f th e 14-rider field and were go ne by the end of lap two. Link was hold ing down th ird when Liparela charged fro m an outside-the-top -five start to come up to fourth. Attanasia was a solid fifth. In almo st a replay of the first moto, Tyrell and Mikola ichi k were only sepa rated by a couple of bikelengths, but it took Mikolaichik a little longer this t ime out to pass Tyrell for the lead ; the pass came o n the final lap. on the lo ng infield straight preced ing the rhythm section. Tyrell was relegated to sec o nd . Mikolaichik held the poin t to the checkers. Tyrell, Llparela. Link and Attanasia rounded out th e top five. Mikolaichik topped the 2SOcc Novice division with a perfect I- I sco re. Tyrell's cons istent 2·2 talfy netted him runner-up, and Uparela rounded o ut the podium with his 3-3 efforts .
