t;; AMA District 6 Points Race Hurricane Hills Spo rts Cente r z vi ffl a: 5 Supercross Returns to Q. i Hurricane Hills z :J w ~ By JIM P. SANDERSON CUFFORD, PA, AUG. 28 S g upercross racing under the lights returned to the beautiful Hurricane Hills Sports Cen te r for the second time this season , after a 12-year w iii hiatus . Hurd Mo torsports. promoters o f t he Hurricane Hill and Broome-Ttcga Sports Cen s te rs, spe nt many weeks updating the uppe r staQ. dium above t he mot ocross track to host night supe rcross racing. Mother Nature almost managed to sto p the eve n ing's raci ng , as she brough t so me thunde rsto rms t hro ugh the area just prio r to the start of pract ice ; nee dless to say, a rainsoaked, m ud dy sup e rc ros s t ra ck can be ex treme ly unforgiving, as many riders quickly fo und o ut fro m th e ir practice ses sio ns. Ms. Natu re decided to give some cooperation , in the form of good wea the r for the rest of the evening, and after the initial slippery practice sessions and the first cou ple of heat races, track conditions weren't quite optimal for supercross, but they we re n't too darn shabby, either. RRP-sponsored Ronnie Stewa rt top ped the podi um in t he superfast Sc hoolboy division . Stewart easily won both his heat race and the main event. Stewart managed to take the maine ve nt wi n w it h a w ho p pi ng 12-s e cond advantage , which wa s a r at he r la rge gap . co nsidering the small supe rcross track layout . a: OJ w ~ Michael Ma ze w as the ele ss of the 6 5cc ranks, going undefeated in five motos at the final raund of the CMA Dominator MX Series. uncontested in the 85cc Inte rmed iate class but welcomed all come rs in the 8Scc ( 12- 16) Open and 85cc X classes. He wo n every mota in bot h of t hos e , despi te strong competit io n from Michael Orr and jessy Art hurs, who finished second and third , respective ly, in both . Cra ig "Rappo" Ranells made his comeback from a scary inj ury su ffere d earlie r in th e summer. (In a freak accident. another rider had lan ded o n hi m d ur ing a pr ac t ice s essi on, breaking seve ra l ribs and se par at ing his right elbow and shoulder.) After a couple of mo nths off, he co uldn't wai t to ge t back out on the t rack. The Syndic at e/C law son Mo to rsp o rts ri der ha d no t rou ble ge tti ng back into his rhythm . He won the Vet Inte rmediate class . took second in Ol d -T un e r s Intermediate com pe t itio n a nd t he O ve r 30 X class . and finishe d third in the 250cc Novice class. That was a pretty good night for an old guy coming 0 (( such severe injuries. Of co ur se , th e b igge st d r a w was the Dominator main event, which was kind of like a re p lay of a co uple o f t he p revious ro un ds . Despite being positioned all the way in the back on an inverted start , Yamaha ride r Josh Co x cut through the pack with authority. He made it to the front with a few laps to spare and added anot her victory to a very successful summer. Afte r t he fina l moto, a series awar ds ceremony was held for all of the riders . Huge smiles - from the little guys, especially - were abundan t when the S-Ioot tr ophi es w ere awarded to class champions. Second- and thirdplace finishers made out nicely as well, rece iving some nice hardware. Overall, the happy ending seemed fitt ing fo r such an enjoyab le a nd successful race series. which is sure to resume next summer. RESULTS 50 FfT: I. Evan Garr et (KT M); 2.
