Doug McBride (Y DeWttt (V ). or Saturday Night YZ Thunder Series Round 6: Ascot MX Park Higgins, Harrell Take the Cake at Ascot MX By CHUCK BAll DORA, OK, AUG. 14 D aci ng began w it h mild te mp e rature s and I"'cle ar skies at the sixt h ro und of t he YZ Th under Ser ies, spo nso red by Yamaha of Fayetteville and Westark Yamaha . With rider cou nt increasing at each rou nd, this weekend saw no less th an 200 riders make their way to Ascot MX Park in Dora, O klahoma. Gran t Higgins po inted his Cobra 50 to the front of t he pack in his first Pee Wee (7-9) mo to an d qu ickly go t away fro m th e pack. Riding smoothly and smart, Higgins stayed o ut fron t, as Trey Boshers , Lando n Post and Wesley Mizell battled behi nd him. When the checke red nag flew, it was Higgins with the win, followed by a hard-charging Boshe rs, Mizell and Post. Moto two was more of the same , as Higgins w hiske d aw ay with t he hole shot and qu ickly made it a game of chase. With the rest of the riders working the ir way around the track, Post made his move to second place and stayed there fo r the rest of t he moto. Bosh er s and Mizell finished third and fo urth, respect ively. Higgins also too k home the overalls in t he Pee Wee O pen and 65cc Junio r classes. T he 85 cc Open r ide rs lined t he gate, anxiously waiting fo r it to fall. When it did, Aaron Harrell used the powe r of his Suzuki to lead the charge, as KTM pilot Levi Best stayed with him in second . Beh ind them were Yamaha ride r Billy Weisner and RM-mounted Briar Sample. Harrell had the track wire d, and he cont inued to lead the way, wit h Best hot on his hee ls. Sample made a quick move on Weisner to take over the third position and set o ut after Best. As the leade rs got tly, into lappers , Best was held up just sligh but it was en ough to let Sample get past for second . Catchi ng Ha r re ll, though , was out o f t he ques tion by the n, as there was no more time . Harrell wo n moto on e, followed by Sample , Best and Le roy Kimmons. In moto two , Harrell once again got out front and q u ickl y ma de himse lf unava ila ble to challengers . With cons istency and speed, Harrell ree led off lap after blazing lap, taking the seco ndmoto wi n fo r the ove rall. C ruising in behi nd Harr ell were Best, Kimmons and Sample. Jess Merriott (Yam SEPTEMBER 22, 2004 • CYCLE NEWS Super Saturday MX Series Round 4: Club Moto Renner Routs 'em at Club Moto By MIKE VANCil UVERMORE, CA, AUG. 14 M ichael Renne r broug ht his Honda to Club Moto to do batt le with all w ho happened to be in his moto s during the fourth ro und of the Motowest -promoted Super Saturday MX Series. He was all business, from pract ice th ro ugh the final lap of his involvem e nt , w inning at every opportunity and doing so with authority. T he event , s ponsored by Dubl in Toyot a, I-Mota and Wiseco Pistons, was a huge success. The tabu lated results don't really te ll the whole story, or at least they were not as imp ressive as the real race , because the Over T he Hill Gang Ove r 38 class contained only fo ur participants, but there were 17 riders in the actual race. Two start waves were empl oyed : Th e first saw the O T HG Over 30 Expe rts and OTHG Over 38 Experts get under way, with Renner gaining the holeshot both times out; the second wave had the fo llowing OTHG O ve r 30 Int ermed iat es, Over 38 Int er m ediate s and O ve r 4 5 Inte r me diat e s. Renne r 's ride was high-s peed prec ision, as he dominated every race . Com ing in behind him in both outings were Yamaha rider Bill Lea and Honda riders TonyAires and Dave Pile. In other moto action , Austin Howell, aboard a fast Suzuki, had an e xcellent eve ning of racing. His first outing was in the first Mini 80cc Open mote, in whi ch he ea rned t he holes hot and we nt on to win t he five-lap affair w hile being challenged every inch of the way by Jonathan Chaparr o, on a fast KTM. In th e second ru nning of th is clas s, it was Chapar ro who got off the line first, w ith Howe ll in pu rsuit , but the end resu lt was th e same as be fore for Howell. Yamaha rider Chris Arroyo took advantage of so me mista kes by Chapar ro to gra b second in this mo to , whic h gave him second overall on the night, behind Howe ll and ahead of Chaparro . Ho w ell was a lso e ntere d in the 80cc Supermini class, during wh ich he powered his Suzuki off the line first in both motos. During t he firs t moto , he battled firs t wi t h Yamaha ride r Gare d Ste inke, but w hen Ste inke faded , Ho w ell had t o ho ld o ff KT M pilot Zach Andra de . Howell won moto one . In the second stanza, Howell again got away fir st , b ut his le a d didn ' t last long , as a n unchar act e rist ic spill to o k him fro m first to third. Andrade brough t the KTM hom e in first, w it h St e inke , on t he Ya m a ha , in seco nd . Andrade garnered the overall, w ith Howell and Steinke finishing secon d and third, respectively. O pening-moto action saw Langham abscon d w ith the holeshot, ahea d of AJ. Wilson and Mike Meade . Langham's reign only lasted about half a lap, as a bo bble handed the to p spo t to Wilson, who took advantage of th e situatio n a nd motored away for the first-mote w in aboard his YZ 125. Me ad e and Jake Hule tt arg ued over second place until lap fou r, w hen Meade went do wn whi le exi t ing a cor ne r. Lan gh am had T 40th Anniversary stea dily worked his way back toward the front after his first- lap miscue. and he overtook Hulett for seco nd place just prior to the white nag. Moto two was all Langham's, as he shot o ut of th e gate o n his Axo/66 1/EV5/ RG 3-backed KXF250 and cont inued on basically uncon tes ted for the win. Wilson's hopes for the overall we re dashed when he came up sho rt o n a do uble and missed the following turn, and with everyone in the class running at a blistering pace . it turned out to be ground that he just couldn't make back up. Hulett held off Meade at the checkers to go 3-2 for second, with Wilson's 1-5 tally top ping the 4-3 score of Meade for third .
