O rr Chad Fe licia holds o n th roug h the final la p fo r the victory a t the a nn ual 2 5-La p Handicap Ma in at Fas t Frida ys Speedway in Au burn, California . 25 -Lap Hand ica p Main Fast Frida ys Spee d w a y Felicio Fleeces 'em at Fur ious Fast Fridays Final! By M. SOBER AUBURN, CA, JULY 30 0rty-year-old speedway veteran Chad Fe licio came to the annual Maita Ford/Fast Fridays25lap Main event determined to secure his second speedway maratho n win and his first since 1996. "It's bee n eight years since I last won one of these things, but I knew tonight I had a real shot at it if I used my he ad ," said Felicio , whose previous win came whe n he was st ill coming off the 20-yard handicap line. The 2S-lapper begins with 10 ride rs, but the grue ling, extra-long nature of the feat ure starts taking its me nt al and physical toll a lmost immediate ly. C hris Kerr, who started on the 80ya rd line (beca use all the usua l hand icap distances a re doubled fo r this eve nt) , was the first casualty when he bailed after just five laps. Greg Hooten Jr. led the first I I laps befo re SRA Speed way Champion Scott Brant nudged him as ide and t o o k ove r t he poin t for t he ne xt se ve n revolu tio ns . Meanwh ile , BO-yar de rs Tommy Hed den and Bryan Yarrow, along with 60-yard starter Bart Bardecki, we re joining Kerr on the side lines. Th e next t o go was Sc rat c h ma in- e vent win ne r Bob by "The Blaze " He dd e n, whose head cold prevented him from making a serious effort to defe nd the 25-lap title he wo n last year. O n lap IS, John Houston, who ran as high as secon d place. ve ered off the groove and rolled around t he outside to a fifth-place finish. O n lap 17, Fe licio worked inside of an obviously tiring Brant and too k over the lead for F 46 good . Brant ran secon d for three laps before the ever diligent Bob Hicks move d on by him and took over second place. Hicks' move seemed to re invigorate Brant, who immediately took back the runner-u p spot and maintained it the rest of the way. O riginal race leader Hooten, who's half Felicio's age, wo rked past Hicks on lap 23 to claim t he th ird-p lace finish. Hicks maintained fourt h, we ll ahead of Houston. who was the final ride r to finish all 25 laps. In the Scratch main, Bobby led all the way, with Kerr running seco nd most of the way until Brant 's brilliant sus tained o uts ide-line e ffort brought him to second place well in time fo r the checkered flag. Despite being passed, Kerr mad e virtua lly no mist akes a nd he ld on for third, ahead of pole-sitter Tommy. Bryce Star ks appeared to be on his way to his first Division O ne Yo ut h main -event win unt il disaster struck and he overs lid and fell off t he t urn-fou r groove. Paul Jo hnso n qui ckly assu med t he lead and wo n go ing away . Ben Essary wo n another Youth Division Two main, w hile th e Division Th ree Youth t rop hy went home with Troy Guisande. CMA!Cla wson Motorsport s Bounty Hunter" Series Round 5: Salinas Sports Complex Steel Shoes in the Mist By EDDIE GRAVELINE SALINAS, CA, JULY 30 ifferent is a word that was used often in the pits during round five of the popular Bounty Hunte r TT Series. It applied to everything from th e track layou t and the so il to the weather. Wherever they loo ked , riders were met by circumstances to which they we re unaccustomed. The track itself made th ings interesting. Most TT races are held on hard-packed clay tracks that develo p blue grooves, but the Salinas Sports Complex had a lot more sand than most riders were used to . Also, the trac k itse lf was more of a true TT course tha n no rma l. There were mo re turn s, as we ll as a really long, superfast straightaway for the start. As for the wea ther, it seemed like a clou d se tt le d on the ou tdoor arena that Friday night: The air was cold and we t , pro vid ing m ajo r c o ntrast t o t he exceptiona lly hot ro unds that preceded it. When racers are taken out of their co mfort zo nes, it's always inte rest ing to see how quickly they can adapt. Most of the time, t hey do so surprisingly fast, and this race was no exception. The action started to ge t hot during the heat races , especially whe n the big boys came out to play. The 250cc Expe rts provided a preview of things to come. Kenny He ess, who splits time be tween mo toc ro ss and flat track, w o n th e heat, over Charlie Pott s, Rodney Spe nce r Jr., Ken Netto a nd Chris Ca nepa - a very solid group . He ess the n won the main event , making himself the favor ite for the big main late r on . Spencer moved up to se c o nd in th e main, followed by Netto. The Modem Open Expert class is the big one at Bounty Hunter races . The fastest guys ride it, competing for some pretty healthy purses. Most of the 2S0cc Expe rt ride rs were in the mix, as we re so me new faces. Series regula r Gen e Manhire was in, along w ith pro motocrosse r Nick Davis. The heat race re ignited a familiar batt le : He e ss an d Spe nce r we re ou t from to ge t he r agai n. T his t im e , Spe nce r pu t his Yamaha in front of Heess' Honda. Potts finished t hird , wi th Kurt C handl e r and Ma nhire completing the to p five. Davis was last, in 12th. In the main, Heess, Spencer, Manhire and Ca nepa thun de red toward the fro nt o n th e ir 4S0s. Canepa had alrea dy wo n main eve nts in t he se rie s, but he seemed to st ruggle a litt le D mo re t han usual on t he sa nd y st uff. Aga in, Heess and Spencer duked it out. It was a close race most of th e way, but Heess got back on top when it counted and to ok t he checkered flag - and a lot of the money tha t Spencer was hoping t o ea rn . Manhire finished t hird , wit h Canepa right be hind him. Any dou bts regarding t he series ' popularity were que lled by the swelling e ntries: The 125cc Novice class had to be separated into three divisions, and the 2S0cc Novices require d four! The good ne ws was tha t th e re would n't be much of a wait for the next round: It was set to take place two days late r in the same stadium. R ES ULTS PP: I. Lauren Williams (Kaw); 2.
