Kentucky Dirt Track Se rie s Carlisle County Fairgrounds Baird Bags Bardwell By BOBBY LEWIS BARDWELl, KY, JULY 31 L uke Baird gassed it up and took the win in the SOcc Shaft divisio n. Baird turned so lid holeshots into w ins each time out, leading Jacob Mo rris to t he flag by a wheel. Hun ter Abernathy was third eac h time o ut. Morris was no t to be denied in the Chain- drive short track and to o k the win over Nick McFadden and Baird. Morris led the IT until he slid down , bringing o ut the red flag. McFadden led the restart and held on fo r the w in, over Baird and Morris. Aaron Ladd nailed t he starts and split fro m the O pe n Pro and Pro-Am fields. Bill Gruwell 's cushion line carried him to second . past third - place finisher Ch ris Fristoe, ea ch time. Jordan jenkle rounded out the Pro class and followed fourth-place finisher Gene Yopp in the Pro -Am ranks. Ladd returned to win the IT final as we ll. Yopp le d the Se nio r-class start, but Mike Ladd we nt to the front o n lap two . Yopp sta lked Mike, waiting for a mistake that finally came on lap four, when he wen t to the front once again. Yopp planted himself on the groove to take the win over Mike Ladd , Mike Ander son . Vintage winner Marty Allison and David Brow n. justin je nkle nailed the start of 8Scc sho rt track and held off jake Lewis to ta ke the w in. Nikki Spo re he ld off a line of riders , co nsisting of Colby Chandler, Nathaniel Vowe ll and Cody Brown, for third. Lewis' final wins came in a sweep of the 65cc class. McFadde n took the runner-up spot on the short trac k, ove r Evan Fields, while Fields took the spot o n the TT. That be ing said, "Showt ime" said he'd had enough of the grind and wa nte d to ge t back to riding for fun and doing things o n his ow n terms . Fort unate ty for fans e verywhere , t he King of Supe rcro ss has done anyth ing but disappea r. From Supermoto to Mammot h , McG r at h ha s ha d o ne bu sy "retire me nt." Instea d of Sitting at ho me and getting bo red , he' s been racing eve nts such as the CMA Bo unty Hunter Series to help fund his life after the natio nal circuit. T he 12Scc Pro qu alifiers pro vided some of th e night 's best racing. Lo ngt ime Suzu ki pilot Scott Davis go t o ut fr o nt in t he firs t race , followed by the similarly named bu t unrelated Nick D avis, wh o also happene d t o be riding S 52 Suzukis. T he d uo e ngaged in a heated battl e that laste d several laps, with Nick finally gaining an edge and winning the race . The se co nd race was almost a carbon cop y of the first , e xcept Nick took the early lead . Scott gave chase , and once again t hey d ue led fierce ly d ur ing th e followin g laps. Nick came o ut o n t o p in t he e nd, an d he ca r ried that mo mentum into th e mai n. jo sh C o x wa s a consisten t third in both races . The o nly ride r to offer any challenge to McGrath in th e 250cc q ualifiers wa s Vince nt Blair, wh o go t cons istently good sta rts o n his KTM thu mpe r. MC was on his game, th ou gh, a nd swep t both motos w it hou t t o o muc h t ro uble . As t he top q ualifie r in t he pre mier division, he would be the number-o ne seed in the main. McGrath made an early pass on Blair, which had a lot of strategic significance , and the two proceed ed to work th roug h traffic together. Within a couple o f lap s, Karmann had t he cha m p br e at hing down his nec k. just imagi ne w ha t a young, aspiring rider wo uld be th inking wh ile be ing chased dow n by a legend! MC moved into the le ad wit ho u t mu c h res istanc e and ran unchallenged for the remainder of the 15 laps. He rewarded the large. enthu siastic crowd with nac-nacs and a slow victory lap. Blair finished sec ond , kee ping his season-long podium stre ak go ing. A hard-charging Nick cross ed the finish line th ird .
