AMA East Coast Speedway Action Park East Parsons Snags First Win at APEI By JASON BONSIGNORE GREENE, NY, JUNE 12 he sec ond speedway race of the year at Acti on Park East in Gree ne , New York, kicked off under nice sk ies and wit h a full tu rnout of speedway racers. Track man Russ Cornell has done a nice job of laying in a new surface, which held together we ll on this occasion an d o nly de ve lop ed a few t ricky spots going into the corners. W ith t hree -time East Coast Spe ed way champion Tom Sephton not in atten dance due to family obligations , the night's to p prize was up for grabs. The Divlsic n On e program was run as an 3011Scratch format, w ith every rider participating in four heat rounds. The to p two points score rs wen t direct ly to the main event, while the next eight in points wou ld go to two se mis. First place in the semis earned a spot in the final, along with the vietor of the last-chance qualifier, whic h was comprised of sec o nd- and th ird place finis hers from the semifinals. As e xpec ted , East Coast hotshoe Jerem y " Dark Ho rse" Parso ns and 56-year-o ld East Coast sta r " Mea n Ge ne " Bo nsignor e we nt unde feated in heat -race action. Youngste r "Flyin' Brian" Hollenbeck rode a great line in th e first semi for th e win , and longtime Eastern pioneer Mike Robinson, w ho hadn't even practiced this year, rode well to win the second semifinal, beating Chris Strong, who was riding some very fast laps. Th e LC Q pi tte d Strong against several newco mers who have show n pro mise t his season: Keith Hawkins, Mike Gille tte and Josh Carr. Tit-Cou nty Collision/Palmetier's Garagesponsored Strong had it in the bag but fell on his own while leading, and the win was credited to Hawkins. T 56 The Scratch main was a showdown between The C ou rt Jeste r/ Ste ve Ten nant -spon so red Parsons and The Just ice Bro t he rs/ Re d Line Suspe nsion- sp onsored O il/ Pr o gre ssive Bo nsignore. Though Bo nsignore had upstaged Parsons twice the week before. it seemed the writing was on the wall whe n Parsons selected gate one and Bonsignore en ded up wit h gate four. Parsons rocke ted out of the gate and led from w ire to wire for his fir st East Coast Division One main-event win, while Bonsignore chopped the others out of gate four for a strong second . Robin son com p le te d a successful come back bid w ith his th ird- place finish , and Hollenb eck and Hawkins finished fourth and fifth, respecti vely. In Sup port A action , Adam Mittl held off young hots hot Mikey Buman for the win, with Shawn Engel and Mike Gillette taking the final two slots. Support B was very exciting, wit h first-year racer Dere k Spenc er gra bb ing the gold. Ryan Kaza was second , with Mike Tompkins third and Andy Pandich fourth . In Junior Speedway racing, Jessie Diem, the son of mult it ime East Coast champ Wa rren Diem , lo o ke d great on h is Rick's Service C e nt er/G e ne The Machi ne lay-down 2S0cc Jawa. Jessie carried the checkers home, while De e Hol den , in her first year o f speedway, looked smooth while nailing second. After t he races , t he good- sized c r owd enjoyed a bonfire and the sound s of the band Midnight Moon at Action Pa rk's Trackside Lounge, and everybody was looking forward to the next even t. JULY 21, 2004 • CYCLE NEWS ound th ree of the AZ-Syntheti clubes Amsoil Challenge races at MotograndeMx was the first to be held under the lights, and it turn ed out to be an action-packed night of racing. Local rider Rhett Urse th, on his Kawasaki KX2 50F, a nd Br ent Dave y, o n his Ho nda CRF2S0R, had the fans on the edges of their sea ts during the co mbined Schoo lboy/Big Bike O pen contest. In mota one, Urse th and Davey led the pack into the first tum, and the battle began. Davey was flying around the track and putti ng on a show fo r t he crowd with his c razy w hips . Urseth, in hot pursuit, was also whipping it over the BO-Ioot ta bletop jumps. O n t he final lap, both riders made the tum toward the finish-line jump, and Urset h passed Davey in the air. Chad West , riding a Honda CRF2S0R, and loca l rider Michae l Brooks , on his Kawasak i KX2 S0 F battled it out in the 12Scc Novice , class, w ith West taking the overall w in. Suzuki RM8S-mou nted Jordan Hunter won both 85cc Beginner mo te s, though not without a challe nge from first-time racer Nick Marks, on a Yamaha YZas. KTM 6 S rid e r Trist a n H unt e r led C .J. Ga lloway, r id ing a Kawasaki KX6 S, to the overall 65cc O pe n-class victory w ith back-toback mota wins. R s. The AZOT and AZ:fT club members raced for the first time at MotograndeMx. It was nice to see their club join in the fun, and eve ryone hopes to see t hem ret urn aga in. AZYT Am at e u r-clas s r ider Dan iel Fleming, o n a Kawasaki KX2S0, won that class and also the Over 30 Beginner class. AZOT Amate ur-class ride r Geo rge German, riding a KTM, had to ho ld off a charge fro m Husabe rg pilot Carl Smith in the first moto but managed to take the overa ll class win.
