Kropp. aboard a 300cc KTM, puiled the ho leshot. Kropp led ap proximately half of t he race until being passed by Kawasaki rider Mat He rrington and Suzuki ride r Chip Bo nge rs. He rrington and Bongers battled each other to the finish, where Her rington edged Bongers by 29 secon ds . Kropp finished third. Honda rider Tom Nelson finished fo urt h, I I seconds be hind Kro pp, and Matt Burton rounded out the top five. In the to ugh B class, Ryan Beabe r qui ckly distanced himself from the rest of the field. At the end , Beaber had a cons idera ble lead ove r second-placed Scott Nickell. Adam Gree nwood finished third. Ro b Ho uts finished fourth, with a significant lead over fifth-placed Jonathan Steuck. Going for the holeshot in the Senior (Ove r 40 ) class, Jo e Kuick, D ave Pet e rs an d Pa ul Bloyer appeared to reach the first corner at the same time . Kuick, aboard a Yamaha , the n led the first few laps until Peters passed nea rly eve ryone in his class to take the lead ; he never loo ked back an d won t he first -pl ace t rophy. Rick Barte l started dead last but worked his way t hro ugh t raff ic up t o second . Kuick finishe d a respectable fo urt h. Some of the most exciti ng racing took place in t he A class. Tom Kalies, a board a 20 0cc KTM, earned the holeshot. Kalies remained the leader for two laps until Mich igan rider Michae l Keen passed him. Keen. w ho also rides a KTM, took complet e co ntr ol of the race . Keen's lap times re mained unmatc hed by any othe r rider in his class. By the e nd of the race , the quick Keen had a co mmanding lead, and he lapped nea rly everyo ne in his division . Mea nwhi le, Kalies battled with his fe ilow Team 2 rider J.D. Leo nardo "Pucho " Bagnis had his wo rk cut o ut for him, as he was run ning in fourth after the first lap. New to the O pen class at Mesa Marin, Yamaha's Matt Pursley was ru nning th ird, and t he "Godfathe r of Supermoto," Rick Pearce , was second. Pucho made his move to the fro nt, passing Pursley o n the slick right-han de r ente ring the NASCAR pitroad sect ion of the course. O n lap two, Pearce fell victim to the savvy riding of Bagnis, but as Bagnis set o ut for Yarrow, the rea l batt le starte d b rew ing be hind him . Wi t h Pursle y hot o n Pe arce's tail, t he wily vet eran anticipated th e newcom er 's every move, and it loo ked like the field was set for the main eve nt. Ho wev e r, o n th e wh it e- flag lap , wi th t he c ro w d o n it s feet , Pu rsl e y ma de on e last attempt at Pearce : On the banked left- bander ente r ing th e d irt se ct ion , Pursle y kep t his Yamaha pinned fo r a sp lit seco nd longe r than Pearce and move d aro und on t he o uts ide . As the two entered the dirt, shoulder to shoulder, they were sur prise d to e nco unte r a tire that ha d be e n kno c ked into th e middle of th e cou rse . Both do dge d it as t hey hit th e high speed jump and mo tored to the che ckers. At the nag, it was Yarrow, Pucho, Pursley, Pearce and, roun ding o ut the top five , Bake rsfield bad boy Steve Ayler. When the gree n flag droppe d for t he main eve nt, it was the Brad Dodenhof-tune d Honda of Pucho and Pursley 's Pinit- powered Yamaha goi ng bar to bar th ro ugh N ASCAR t urns o ne and two, the inside advantage giving Pucho the le ad as th e pa ck th undered down Pit Road . Yarrow tr ied an inside move on Pursley as they reached the en d of the fast straig ht and dived int o t he r ight- hand e r lead ing t o t he e ss es . Pursley pinched off Yarrow and de nied him the second spot, but as they ro ared across the line fo r the first time , Yarrow slid his Pinit Hon da just on the inside of Pursley as they en tered the supe rfast sweeper. By the midway point, it was apparent tha t Bagnis had this on e in the bag. It rai ne d so hard t ha t so me thou ght the eve nt might be called, but just as fast as it had started, the rain came to a stop, and the sun came ou t , nice and bright . Wh ile the first cou ple of practice s were muddy, the track shaped up q uickly. Wh en the first moto of the day came to the line , the track was in great shape . With the help of the South Fo r k crew, the track stayed in great shape all day. O ne rider seemed to stand out above the rest of the fie ld: longtime Suzuki rider Shea Knuth. "Th is is the first t ime t hat I have raced all yea r," Knut h ad mitt ed . "I have bee n riding at home, but just not racing." Th is longtime local ra cer is sim ply gifted with sp e ed . He ca n often be see n wit h his gra ndpa . who has accom panied him to the track from the first time he ever raced . T he first to sme ll wha t Knut h was cook ing was t he 14-24 class . Knut h put th e ha mmer down and took bo th mot os and the overall win. The next class o n the menu was the 125cc A. Riding a 125, Knuth fo und himself beh ind the Yamaha four-st roke of C hris Schmulbac h and the Husky fo ur-stro ke of Brandon Pe tty o n the first lap. Knuth had his RM12S on the main jet, and he re el e d in t he four-s t rokes , mak ing passes and heading toward the fron t. O nce he got there, Schmulbach and Pe tty fo ught for the seco nd sp ot . Schm ulbac h, who has a lso no t bee n see n at t he t rac k ve ry muc h th is year, rod e we ll and finished secon d, w ith Petty third. The seco nd mot o almost looke d like a rerun of th e first .
