Though it w a s his first time riding a four-stroke in a supercross environment, Jeremy McGrath's re sults were nothing ne w : He w o n both 250« motos and the Bounty Hunter main event at round two of the series in Sa nta Maria, California. McG rat h and Young. It w as Me 's fir st supe rcross eve r on a (our-stroke , and it was evident he needed some time to ge t used to t he CRF1 50R's perso na lit y. Nevert heless , the undispu ted king wo rked his wa y into the lead and too k the mo ta win. Blair crashed out of the first rnoto, surrenderi ng the runne r-up spot to the hard-charg ing Young. The d rop of the gate in the final 250<:c race yielded the same resu lts as the first: a Blair holeshot. He was eventually passed by McGrath , but he kept it on two wh eels to finish second. Young was third in the moto for second overall and appeared to have the best chance of upsetting McGrath in the main . Th e main event featured the usual Single- file, inverted start. As the top qualifier. McGrat h was posit ioned at the very back, with Young and Blair in fro nt of him . T he first few laps were a free-for-all. w ith several of the ride rs in the front of the pack vying fo r the lead . It took McG rat h a cou ple of laps to get aro und Blair, bu t o nce he did , he qu ickly sliced thr ough the pack . Loo king more at ease with the four-st ro ke every lap, Me too k over the lea d before the halfway point. From there, he ran the final 10 laps flawlessl y, throwi ng one- handed wh ips an d oung and pointing to the crowd when the wh ite flag came out. Y Blair finished second and third, respectively, and had plenty to be proud of: They were the only ride rs in the fie ld running at a pace dose to that of McGrath, w ho showed that he hasn't lost much speed since "retiring." There were a lot of happy McGrath fans in the stands that night. They saw one of the sport's all-time heroes beat some hungry prospects. Gett ing to see him race a 450 for the first time was icing o n t he ca ke .
