Pit crews hung on to EZ-U ps and all the ir be longings, while riders and mecha nics prepped bikes for rou nd five in the Nat ional Championships. With only eight-te nths o f a secon d se parating the top t hree 125cc qualifie rs, the stage was se t to see if ex peri ence co uld triumph ove r youth. Carlos Neves took the holeshot to lead the 12· lap 12Scc GP race . A broke n tachomete r forced Neves to make on bo a rd re pa ir s w hile sti ll t rying to main ta in t he le ad . Unfortunate ly, he hit the kill switch, giving way to the freight train just behind him. Josh He rrin led Jon Schendel and Mike Orien, while Neves gave chase, only to be dogged by anothe r prob lem when his Jolly Mota expansion chamber ruptured halfway through the race . The podium was captured by Herrin, Schend el and Neves. There wa s also plen ty o f action furthe r be hind the leaders. Early in the race, Manny Juarez exec uted a spectacular save afte r running off t he trac k thr ough the back esses. Scott Bourke and Ryan Ferris ran a heated race for eight h place, swa pping pos itions several times on eve ry lap. The de sert wi nds had no mercy o n t he 250cc Gp, w hich continued a display of crunching me tal and plastic from Saturday. Mark Watts made rep airs just in time for qualifyi ng on Saturday afte r his bike was knocked over by the wind. Robin Clark's bike had suffered grea t damage in a get-off during Saturday's pract ice.
