Watts took the lead from SCOll McNew at the end of the first
lap afte r he ran wide exiting the back esses, closely followed by
Schendel and Henin. Neves , gridded in last place as a res ult of a
late e ntry, gained too fast on McNew in the Bow l and slammed o n
the brakes for a high-speed stopple, caus ing his front numberplate
to be rubbed off by McNew's rear tire and tail sectlcn, Herrin,
attempting an outside pass on Ne ves, had nowhe re to go when
Neves went down. Bot h managed to re- jo in the race, despite
significant damage to both bikes and riders . Shortly afte r be ing
rea r-ended by Neves, McNew 's motor seized. and he was forced
to reti re . Schend e l made a late charge o n Watts in the last laps but
was he ld up by a lapped rider coming into the last set of turns,
while Watts was able to drive inside and pass that rider. Ro und ing
out the 2S0cc GP podium were Watts , Sche nde l and Clar k.
